The filming of The Diplomat season 2 predominantly took place in London, England. Renowned as one of the UK’s premier filming locales, the city served as a fitting backdrop given its ties to the show’s political themes. A standout location is St. Paul’s Cathedral, where the production ambitiously filmed for four consecutive days, a notable achievement given its bustling tourist activity.

“Nobody has ever closed St. Paul’s for four full days, which we did,” remarked E.J. Richards, the supervising location manager, in an interview with Tudum.

“Not even the queen,” he humorously added.

Several embassy scenes were captured at the London North Studios, although some were also filmed on-site at the US Embassy in London. Notably, the White House scenes were primarily filmed at the London North Studios, while the intimate scenes set in the home of Kate and Hal were shot in the stunning Wrotham Park located in Hertfordshire.

To portray the Foreign Office, filming took place at One Great George Street, a corporate conference venue situated in Westminster. In pursuit of authenticity, some scenes were also shot at the actual Foreign Office, capturing both interiors and exteriors.

Additional historic scenes were recorded at Harefield House, which represented Prime Minister Trowbridge’s residence in the series. Interestingly, a scene intended to depict Paris was filmed at the London Marriott Hotel County Hall, showcasing the versatility of London’s venues.

One of the pivotal moments of the season occurs in episode 6 during Prime Minister Trowbridge’s formal dinner event. This elaborate sequence was filmed at Wilton House in Salisbury, a historic venue that adds gravity to the narrative. Moreover, some impressive shots were taken at Blenheim Palace, famously known as Winston Churchill’s birthplace.

“We’re talking about the work of governments and diplomacy in a historical place where one of the most famous politicians in the UK actually grew up — you feel the very real weight of history when you’re there,” said executive producer Janice Williams, reflecting on the importance of the location.

Scotland: Scenic Backdrops and Intimate Moments

Additionally, one sequence featuring Hal was notably filmed in the charming town of Inveraray, while other lower-level city settings were creatively depicted using Argyle’s scenic locations.
