This commitment to originality has birthed iconic titles like Max Payne, but experimenting with innovative concepts can sometimes yield less favorable outcomes, as seen with Quantum Break. Nevertheless, this boldness is precisely what keeps a loyal fan base returning, now eagerly anticipating the arrival of Control 2.

Since entering full production in August 2024, Remedy has maintained a transparent dialogue regarding the sequel’s progress. Notably, the studio has announced a shift in genre for Control 2, transitioning to an action-RPG style. Given the commercial performance of Alan Wake 2, this strategic pivot might serve the franchise well.

Control 2’s Genre Transition: A Significant Move

During Remedy’s Capital Markets Day in November 2024, the studio revealed that Control 2 will embrace an action-RPG format. This marks a departure from the action-adventure classification of the original game and implies the inclusion of features typical of role-playing games, such as enhanced skill trees and possibly even a gear or loot system. Speculations also suggest an emphasis on choice-driven narratives.

Since its launch in 2019, the original Control has cultivated a dedicated fan base. While nostalgia for the original gameplay mechanics remains strong, there’s a risk that significant alterations could alienate existing enthusiasts.

A Necessary Risk: Embracing Change

Yet, the decision to alter the genre might be an essential one for Remedy. Despite the acclaim garnered by Alan Wake 2 upon its October 2023 release—where it quickly became Remedy’s fastest-selling title—the game has struggled to achieve its full commercial potential.

CEO Tero Virtala discussed the financial standing of Alan Wake 2, noting in a March 2024 Business Review that a “significant part”of its development costs had been recouped. By November 2024, he confirmed that most expenses had been recovered, indicating that over a year post-launch, the game had not yet reached profitability.

While Alan Wake 2 isn’t a failure or disappointment, its sales figures linger in the minds of Remedy executives. Although not officially stated, it’s plausible that the mixed commercial success of Alan Wake 2 contributed to the decision to reframe Control 2‘s genre. Remedy’s strategic initiative is clear—targeting broader audiences as articulated during their presentation.

Nonetheless, fans of Control need not fear a drastic departure from the beloved elements of the original. Sam Lake from Remedy emphasized creating “commercial hits,”while asserting the artistic essence that defines their work. He noted, “What we create at Remedy is special, and we must never lose that.”
