Today, while launching Microsoft Paint, I came across a pop-up inviting me to join the newly introduced Windows AI Labs, an unannounced initiative aimed at beta testing artificial intelligence enhancements. Initially, the program will focus on features akin to background removal and similar functionalities, starting with MS Paint but potentially expanding to a range of integrated applications in the future.
The screenshot above illustrates that Windows AI Labs operates as an opt-in program, with Microsoft currently extending invites to a select group of testers. If you are among the chosen few, a notification will appear in the top right corner saying, “Try experimental AI features in Paint: Sign up for the Windows AI Labs program for Paint in Settings.” A ‘Try Now’ button is provided for easy access.
Clicking ‘Try Now’ redirects you to the Settings menu, where a card labeled “Try experimental AI features in Paint” is displayed, along with a prominent Sign up button. Once you enroll, Microsoft may activate new AI features for your account in Paint.
Participants have the option to select “Not Interested” to decline the offer. If you wish to join the beta test for experimental AI functionalities in Paint, it’s important to note that, at this stage, the backend for Windows AI Labs isn’t operational yet. This suggests that Microsoft unintentionally distributed the invitation to all users, including those using stable versions of Paint.
This pop-up did not require a new Paint update from the Microsoft Store, indicating that it’s a server-side change. It’s fascinating to see how Microsoft leverages server-side updates to introduce users to potential new features in Paint.
Official Confirmation of Windows AI Labs Initiative
The pop-up card includes links to a program agreement document that provides further details about Windows AI Labs. According to the information uncovered by Windows Latest, the program is aimed at facilitating ongoing evaluation and feedback on pre-release versions of features, capabilities, and services in Microsoft Paint.
Microsoft emphasizes that the features within Windows AI Labs are not finalized, and participants should be aware that some desirable changes might never be officially released.“When Microsoft broadly rolls out features in Windows AI Labs, participants may need to update their Paint application to access those enhancements, ”the company warns.
Additionally, Windows AI Labs features will be considered in the “preview”phase and may not meet the usual quality standards expected from Windows applications.“Your early feedback will be instrumental in refining these features for the wider audience, ”Microsoft mentioned.
Further developments regarding Windows AI Labs are anticipated, paralleling Google’s Search Lab, which allows users early access to experimental features, some of which may eventually be shelved.
In a recent announcement, Microsoft also unveiled a Photoshop-like project and a new opacity selector for Paint.
