Obsidian Entertainment’s highly anticipated action RPG, Avowed, expands upon the rich fantasy universe originally established in the acclaimed Pillars of Eternity series. As is typical of an intricately crafted fantasy realm, the world of Eora is laden with diverse histories and complex lore that enrich the player’s experience.
A pivotal aspect of the lore surrounding Avowed is its player-character, who is referred to as a “Godlike.”This designation indicates that the character’s spirit has been endowed with a blessing from one of Eora’s eleven deities before their birth. Such blessings are often apparent through unique physical traits. For example, Moon Godlikes—blessed by Ondra—feature distinct crescent moon-shaped growths on their foreheads, along with captivating blue or purple skin. Unlike the character creation system in Pillars of Eternity, however, players in Avowed will not initially know which of the eleven gods has conferred their blessing, introducing an intriguing dynamic to character customization.
Godlike Features: A Distinct Element of Avowed’s Character Creation

Raising the Bar for Character Creators
Character creation tools in RPGs have evolved remarkably over the years, particularly with recent titles redefining expectations. For instance, Baldur’s Gate 3 has garnered acclaim for its extensive character creator, which offers an impressive range of options to customize both physical and personality traits.
Similarly, Dragon’s Dogma 2 received accolades for its in-depth customization system, allowing players to manipulate exceedingly granular aspects of their characters, including their teeth. With such high benchmarks set, Avowed faces a challenging endeavor to meet these player expectations, though it appears to have unique features that could set it apart.
Unleashing Creativity with Godlike Features in Avowed
Players typically fall into one of two design philosophies when customizing their RPG characters. Some aim for realism, crafting visually appealing characters with natural proportions, while others embrace whimsy, creating outlandish monsters that embody unique interpretations of character customization.
Avowed seems to cater explicitly to the latter, with its emphasis on Godlike attributes that allow for strikingly unusual character designs. Players will have the opportunity to select from a variety of distinctive Godlike facial and hair features. While not all possible features have been confirmed, a recent promotional image shared on Twitter illustrates some of the bizarre variations—including characters with enormous fungal growths emerging from their heads or moss sprouting from behind their ears.
(yay) Players will have the option to toggle on/off Godlike Features. Please note that NPCs will still react to your godlike features, if you choose to hide them. If you don’t hide them, go nuts.pic.twitter.com/7gV0hMdrha — Avowed (@AvowedtheGame) January 24, 2025
Overall, the character creator in Avowed promises to be comprehensive, offering traditional RPG customization features such as race, background, physical attributes, and voice selection. However, it is the unique Godlike features that could differentiate Avowed from leading titles like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dragon’s Dogma 2, offering players an innovative avenue for expression within this fantasy world.
