During a murder trial in New York, a defendant attributed his peculiar Google search activity to his fascination with the case of rapper YNW Melly. On October 9, 2024, Syracuse.com featured an article highlighting the dramatic trial in Syracuse involving Jauquell Flagg, linked to a fatal shooting incident from May 2023.
The tragic event occurred on May 29, 2023, when a group of four men fired shots from a stolen Chevrolet Malibu, resulting in the death of 44-year-old Desmond Jones and injuries to three other individuals. In his opening remarks, prosecutor Rob Moran claimed that Flagg was identified as one of the shooters due to incriminating Google search data retrieved from his phone.
In defense, Flagg’s attorney contended that his client was simply interested in rapper YNW Melly’s legal troubles, claiming he regularly followed Melly’s court appearances. Melly was apprehended for the alleged murders of his associates, YNW SakChaser and YNW Juvy.

According to Syracuse.com, Rob Moran elaborated on a timeline tracing Jauquell Flagg’s activities prior to the violent event. He argued that Flagg was seen driving his mother’s vehicle throughout the day before stopping close to where the stolen Chevrolet Malibu was located. Video evidence was presented, showing a Jeep in proximity to the Malibu, which later went missing.
Moran asserted that merely 24 hours post-shooting, Flagg conducted a search inquiring about the criteria necessary for a jury to convict someone of murder, which he quickly erased from his search history.
Flagg’s attorney, Shawn Chase, defended this online inquiry, claiming his client is a deep admirer of rap music and YNW Melly. He did not provide an explanation for the deletion of the search history.
YNW Melly, born Jamell Maurice Demons, gained popularity with the release of “Murder on My Mind”in 2018. In February 2019, he faced charges for the murders of friends YNW Juvy (Christopher Thomas Jr.) and YNW SakChaser (Anthony D’Andre Williams) in a fatal incident in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, dating back to October 2018.
Melly was charged with two counts of first-degree premeditated murder.
His trial commenced on June 12, 2023, after several postponements. Melly pleaded not guilty, asserting that his friends were fired upon while departing from the New Era Recording Studio. The prosecution, however, contended that he was responsible for the double homicide, attempting to simulate a drive-by shooting scenario.
The jury ultimately failed to reach a unanimous verdict, resulting in a mistrial declared by a judge on July 22, 2023. YNW Melly remained incarcerated as the judge refused to grant bail.
Initially, his retrial was scheduled for October 2023. However, according to a report from NBC Miami in July 2024, after numerous delays and new allegations of witness tampering against the rapper, the trial is now set for September 10, 2025, with a pre-trial hearing on December 5, 2024.
No public comments have been made by Melly or his representatives regarding this latest update.
