Explanation for John Turturro’s Absence in The Penguin

Fans of John Turturro, who previously brought the character Carmine Falcone to life in Matt Reeves’s The Batman, were taken aback when they discovered he wouldn’t be part of the new The Penguin series on HBO.

Initially, there was much speculation regarding Turturro’s absence, with some even hinting at potential disputes between him and the show’s creators. However, it was later clarified that scheduling conflicts were the primary reason for his non-participation.

Turturro was engaged in prior commitments that ultimately prevented him from joining the cast of The Penguin. Consequently, Mark Strong was cast to portray a younger Carmine Falcone in several flashback sequences.

Understanding John Turturro’s Exclusion from HBO’s The Penguin

John Turturro originally debuted as Carmine Falcone, a villain from the DC Comics universe, in the 2022 film The Batman.

His absence from the series sparked disappointment among fans, especially in light of Mark Strong being recast for the role, with numerous comments surfacing on social media platforms like X.

“Mark Strong is a fantastic actor, but I was really hoping to see John Turturro in this week’s episode of THE PENGUIN,”commented one user.

“The one thing I don’t appreciate about the Penguin series is the lack of John Turturro as Carmine Falcone… I mean, the current actor is good, but John is my favorite,”wrote another user.

“I’m really enjoying episode 4 of #ThePenguin, and while Mark Strong plays a solid Carmine Falcone, I can’t help but think how exciting it would have been to have John Turturro back in this role,”added another fan.

In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly on October 13, 2024, showrunner Lauren LeFranc addressed why John Turturro was not included in the HBO series, responding to fan inquiries. She stated:

“At first, we absolutely wanted John to return as Carmine Falcone! He’s an incredibly talented actor who shone in the film. But when we realized that his schedule wouldn’t align with our plans, we had to focus on finding someone with the same gravitas and intensity—qualities that Mark Strong undeniably possesses.”

LeFranc also added that they couldn’t completely exclude the character of Carmine from the storyline, as he plays a crucial role in Sofia’s character arc. She mentioned that Mark Strong’s portrayal acts as a younger iteration of Turturro’s Falcone from The Batman.
