Explaining Crowley’s Gender in Good Omens: Key Insights

Created by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, Good Omens is a fantasy comedy series that premiered its first season on Prime Video on May 31, 2019, with the second season released on July 28, 2023. The series, which Douglas Mackinnon directs, has garnered a loyal fan base, resulting in a renewal for a third and final season announced in December 2023. Additionally, in October 2024, it was revealed that this concluding season would culminate in a distinctive 90-minute finale episode.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the show’s official synopsis states:

“This fantasy series features the fastidious angel Aziraphale and the easy-going demon Crowley who join forces as an unconventional pair. Both have grown fond of their earthly existence, prompting them to unite in a bid to avert the impending Armageddon.”

The synopsis further explains:

“To achieve this, they must locate an 11-year-old boy, the missing Antichrist, who remains blissfully unaware of his pivotal role in humanity’s doom.”

David Tennant portrays the demon Crowley, who is characterized by his fiery red hair and yellow, slitted eyes. Neil Gaiman, the series creator, has indicated that Crowley is gender fluid.

In a tweet from July 2019, showrunner Neil Gaiman remarked that “angels and demons are sexless beings. They are devoid of gender.”He clarified that although Aziraphale and Crowley are depicted as male characters, their identities may not strictly align with traditional gender norms.

Then, in January 2022, Gaiman labeled Crowley as a “Fallen Angel”and designated Aziraphale’s identity as “Angel (retired).”

A year later, in June 2023, a fan directly asked Gaiman on his official Tumblr account if they could perceive Crowley as gender fluid. His affirmation, “You might as well. I do,”supports this view quite well.

This understanding aligns with the visual portrayal of Crowley throughout the series, where he exhibits characteristics that range from masculine to feminine and androgynous. Notably, during the Crucifixion scene, Crowley is seen in feminine attire and long hair. He also adopts a nurturing role while temporarily serving as a nanny for Warlock, who is incorrectly identified as the Antichrist.

Conversely, Crowley also dons a typical male suit and tie in various scenes. Given that the series spans thousands of years, his changing wardrobe effectively symbolizes his gender fluidity.

Synopsis of the Series

The initial season portrays Aziraphale and Crowley, who are initially instructed to facilitate the apocalypse with the Antichrist’s aid. However, their growing attachment to humanity, as well as to each other, inspires them to change course and encourage the Antichrist to adopt a neutral stance, ultimately averting the world’s end.

While they succeed in saving the Earth and its inhabitants, their rebellion leads to consequences, resulting in their expulsion from Heaven and Hell. Season 2 shifts focus to Gabriel, the archangel’s mysterious loss of memory when arriving naked at Aziraphale’s bookstore. Following this, Aziraphale ascends to Gabriel’s former status as the leading archangel and begins to prepare for the Second Coming.

Meanwhile, Crowley confesses his love to Aziraphale but is rejected, leading him to remain on Earth as Aziraphale rises to Heaven.
