Madara Uchiha’s pursuit of awakening the Rinnegan was marked by meticulous manipulation and strategic planning, distinguishing him from other Uchiha who predominantly focused on their Sharingan. His ambition pushed him to transcend the conventional path, leading to the quest for the powers of the Sage of Six Paths.

This intricate endeavor interwove themes of ambition and power throughout the Naruto series. Madara’s actions set off significant events, eventually contributing to the establishment of the Akatsuki and the outbreak of the Fourth Great Ninja War, fundamentally altering the course of the Shinobi world.

The Rinnegan represents a significant advancement beyond the Sharingan. While the Mangekyo Sharingan can emerge from deep emotional scars and the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan through the transplantation of another’s eyes, the Rinnegan demands a more complicated process for its acquisition. This requires merging the chakra of Indra and Asura, the sons of Hagoromo Otsutsuki, the Sage of Six Paths.

Indra was endowed with his father’s formidable chakra and visual powers, whereas Asura, despite being less naturally gifted, possessed a strong will and compassion. Their reincarnated avatars repeatedly clashed, resulting in the Uchiha inheriting Indra’s chakra and the Senju embodying Asura’s. However, neither clan was able to awaken the Rinnegan independently, as they only bore half of the necessary elements.

As Indra’s reincarnation, Madara Uchiha was driven by an insatiable thirst for power. His intense rivalry with Hashirama Senju, who was the reincarnation of Asura, propelled their continuous battles. Madara understood that true supremacy necessitated more than just Uchiha strength; he needed to incorporate Asura’s chakra, which required him to merge his DNA with that of Hashirama.

The epic confrontation between Madara and Hashirama defined their times, with Hashirama being the only shinobi able to rival Madara. Hashirama’s unique Wood Release ability made it challenging for even those with the awakened Sharingan to hold their ground against him. Despite wielding the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, Madara could never secure victory. In their climactic battle at the Valley of the End, he resorted to desperate measures to attain absolute power. During their fight, he deceitfully obtained a small portion of Hashirama’s flesh, which he kept and later used for self-experimentation.

This transformational journey to manifest the Rinnegan required years, if not decades, indicating that sheer willpower alone could not trigger it. Madara connected himself to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to facilitate the fusion of Indra and Asura’s chakra, propelling him toward becoming the Sage of Six Paths. However, upon attaining this power, Madara was already advanced in age. With little time remaining, he strategized a new plan.

Transferring Rinnegan Power to Nagato

The Rinne Rebirth Jutsu Strategy

Madara’s determination to achieve his vision of ultimate power meant he was prepared for self-preservation, which led him to secretly incorporate his Rinnegan into Nagato, an Uzumaki clan member with the vitality and chakra reserves necessary to wield such power. His grand design involved having Nagato resurrect him through the Rinne Rebirth Jutsu—a technique capable of reviving a deceased individual at a great personal cost.

Furthermore, Madara manipulated Obito Uchiha to assist in executing his agenda, fostering a sense of kinship as members of the same clan. Unbeknownst to Nagato, he believed his power stemmed from personal suffering and the loss of Yahiko, leading him to establish the Akatsuki with the idea of achieving world peace through pain. However, he was merely a piece on Madara and Obito’s chessboard.

While Madara’s intricate plan relied on Nagato activating the Rinne Rebirth Jutsu to restore him, circumstances did not unfold as anticipated. After years of being manipulated by Obito, Nagato opted to sacrifice himself to restore the lives of Konoha’s citizens. The influence of Naruto and Nagato’s convictions ultimately prevailed over Madara’s grand design, forcing Obito to pursue alternative methods to resurrect Madara.

During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Obito employed Kabuto‘s Edo Tensei to bring Madara back, after which Madara took advantage of the situation and compelled Obito to restore him fully to life using the Rinne Rebirth Jutsu. With his Rinnegan reclaimed, Madara regained his godlike abilities, harnessing formidable techniques such as Chibaku Tensei, Limbo Clones, and the full extent of the Six Paths’ power, enabling him to execute the Infinite Tsukuyomi he had long envisioned.
