Effective management of magic points (MP) is essential for every player in the Dragon Quest franchise, particularly in Dragon Quest VII Reimagined. Despite the enhancements made to the original game, mastering MP management remains crucial for transitioning from a novice to an expert player. By grasping the strategies outlined below, you can enhance your gaming experience from the very start.
Avoid Overusing MP: Take Control

While it may be tempting to let the AI manage your characters through the “Fight Wisely”Tactics option, it’s essential to maintain a more active role in battles. This AI-driven tactic often expends MP unnecessarily by using spells or skills on groups of enemies, even when a standard attack could suffice.
To conserve your MP, take back manual control when only a few enemies remain. By pressing the Triangle/Y/X button, you can access the Tactics menu. If you prefer not to micromanage every move, opt for “Don’t Use MP.” This command allows your party to defeat enemies using regular attacks, reserving your valuable MP for critical moments.
Utilize Enhanced Mechanics

The remake offers several new features that simplify MP management compared to previous versions, including:
- No Random Encounters: Unlike past games, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined eliminates random encounters outside of ship travel, allowing you to pick your battles strategically in dungeons and avoid unnecessary conflicts.
- The Zoom Spell: At the game’s outset, you gain access to the Zoom spell, which enables you to exit dungeons and recover at inns for free. This allows for efficient resource management while preparing for imminent boss fights.
- Angel Statues: These serve not only as save points but also restore your HP and MP for free. Make sure to reach these statues near boss fights to ensure you’re well-prepared for the challenge ahead.
Discover Glowing Spots and Containers

Within Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, you’ll find MP-restoring items, such as the Single Phial. These items are generously scattered throughout the game and can typically be discovered by inspecting glowing spots on the map, as well as by searching through closets, drawers, and breaking barrels or vases.
Harness the Power of the “Little Devil Heart”

The remake transforms the Monster Hearts system into accessories providing passive abilities. Among these, the Little Devil Heart is particularly valuable for MP management during pivotal battles.
This accessory grants a character the ability to automatically use a Single Phial when their MP drops below 50%, without consuming a turn. However, it’s crucial to use this item wisely, as equipping it during regular skirmishes might lead to excessive consumption of your phials.
To optimize its effectiveness, equip the Little Devil Heart upon reaching an Angel Statue in a dungeon. This allows your MP-dependent characters to contribute effectively in boss encounters without the stress of running low on magic, especially until you unlock the invaluable Magic Drain skill.
Drawing from my gameplay experience of over 50 hours, this tactic has proven advantageous, allowing my character Maribel to unleash spells without the constant worry of MP shortages prior to accessing crucial skills. I highly recommend using the Little Devil Heart to ease the difficulties of boss confrontations as soon as you acquire it.
This concludes the guide on mastering MP management for Dragon Quest VII Reimagined.
