NVIDIA DLSS 4: A Major Leap Forward in Gaming Technology
NVIDIA’s latest offering, DLSS 4, is poised to revolutionize gaming performance and image quality. Recent tests, particularly an evaluation of its implementation in Cyberpunk 2077, underscore the transformative enhancements this technology promises.
Test Insights from Digital Foundry
Industry experts at Digital Foundry conducted hands-on testing with NVIDIA DLSS 4 in conjunction with the newly unveiled RTX 5080 GPU. Their findings reveal that even in its preliminary state, running on an engineering sample without the final drivers, DLSS 4 distinguishes itself from its predecessor. This iteration employs a vision transformer for AI upscaling, resulting in superior image stability, less ghosting, increased detail, and improved anti-aliasing—all of which address several image quality challenges faced by DLSS 3’s convolutional neural network.
Enhanced Performance with Multi Frame Generation
A standout feature of DLSS 4 is its exclusive Multi Frame Generation, available only with the RTX 50 series. This innovation can produce up to three additional frames for each traditionally rendered frame, significantly amplifying frame rates by as much as 8x compared to standard rendering techniques. In particularly demanding scenarios like the black market scene in the Petrochem stadium, utilizing DLSS 4 on the RTX 5080 allows Cyberpunk 2077 to output at 4K resolution with path tracing enabled. Remarkably, this configuration achieved a frame rate increase of 535% over native 4K resolution, with potential enhancements of 725% and 935% through the generation of two and three additional frames, respectively. Each of these scenarios pushed the frame rate beyond the remarkable 120 FPS threshold, showcasing the robust power of this technology.
Upcoming Game Titles with Native DLSS 4 Support
Excitingly, Cyberpunk 2077 is not alone in adopting this technology; it will receive native in-game support later this month, along with other major titles like Alan Wake 2, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, among others. Additionally, several upcoming games such as Black Myth: Wukong and Marvel Rivals are slated to integrate DLSS 4 in future updates, further expanding the technology’s impact on the gaming landscape.
