Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for American Primeval!
Insights from Peter Berg on Season 2 of American Primeval
Peter Berg, the executive producer of American Primeval, recently shared updates about the possibility of a second season of the critically discussed series. Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Taylor Kitsch, Betty Gilpin, Shawnee Pourier, and Derek Hinkey, the show delves into the complexities of mid-19th century frontier life in America, focusing particularly on the Mormon pioneer experience in the Utah Territory and their interactions with local Indigenous tribes. Created by Mark L. Smith, the show has attracted mixed reviews from critics, although audience feedback has been predominantly favorable.
Challenges of Production and the Future of American Primeval
In a recent dialogue with Decider, Berg reflected on his affection for the cast and crew while also noting the harsh filming conditions they faced. He indicated that the show’s future could hinge on improved weather and the participation of Julie O’Keefe, the Indigenous Consultant. Berg emphasized that the logistics of production are crucial in determining whether the series will continue.
Peter Berg: “You know, after we wrapped, and I looked at all the actors — the ones that were still alive — I felt such affection for them. And I do think there are many ways that we could go. I’ve still got to thaw out from my time spent up on those mountains in the winter, but maybe if they got to lower ground, that wasn’t quite as cold, we could. We could go back. If [Indigenous Consultant] Julie [O’Keefe] will come back, I’d be up for discussing it.”
Julie O’Keefe: “As long as I don’t have to have ice cleats again, I definitely will come back.”
What Could A Season 2 Focus On?
If American Primeval is renewed, the upcoming season will likely revolve around the characters that survived the first season, particularly in light of Isaac’s sacrifice in the finale. This pivotal moment positions characters such as Sara, Devin, and Two Moons at the forefront, presenting ample opportunities for deeper character exploration as they navigate new survival challenges and embark on a quest to locate Sara’s husband.
Addressing Production Challenges
It is critical that production teams address the formidable hurdles presented by the extreme cold conditions experienced during filming. Plans to relocate filming sites to more temperate environments will be essential in ensuring the welfare and comfort of the cast and crew while preserving the show’s rugged aesthetic.
Furthermore, Julie O’Keefe’s expertise remains invaluable for ensuring that the series accurately represents Indigenous cultures. Her return is pivotal to maintaining the authenticity and respect for Indigenous narratives that were evident in the first season. Without her involvement, the integrity of the show could be jeopardized.
Our Perspective on the Prospects for Season 2
The potential for a second season of American Primeval hinges on balancing the demands of filming conditions with the artistic and cultural integrity of the series. Audience reception has been positive, enhancing the case for a return, while practical issues surrounding production logistics and consultant participation remain vital for moving forward. If these concerns are effectively resolved, season 2 has the promise to delves even deeper into the trials of frontier life.
