For those fans who have followed the entirety of My Hero Academia, the OVA titled “My Hero Academia – Save! Rescue Training!”may ring a bell. This episode originally premiered at Jump Festa, an annual celebration of Shōnen Jump and its various titles, shortly after the first season concluded in 2016.

This episode is unique in more ways than one. It marks the first OVA that includes rescue training, despite many fans recalling a different series of episodes from Season 4. Here’s a brief synopsis of “Save! Rescue Training!”:

  • The class returns to the USJ training facility post-Season 1, where instructors inform them of additional rescue training, seemingly without All Might’s presence. Deku, Ochaco, and Iida are designated as the ones needing rescue.
  • Meanwhile, other prominent students such as Todoroki, Momo, Bakugo, and Tsuyu assume the roles of rescuers in the first part of this exercise. However, the dynamic shifts dramatically when Bakugo’s stubbornness complicates the “rescue” efforts.
  • As the exercise progresses to an urban disaster scenario, Deku, Ochaco, Bakugo, and Mineta suddenly encounter a formidable villain who surprisingly overwhelms Todoroki!
  • The confrontation enthralls viewers when the villain’s mask is removed, revealing All Might in disguise—much to the shock of the students and audience alike!

This summary barely scratches the surface of the humor and excitement within the episode, featuring meta-commentary that adds a unique layer to the show. With memorable moments, including characters saying, “Because we’re in a Jump Festa special!”while lamenting their circumstances, the DVD remains accessible online. Given the persistent popularity of MHA, it’s conceivable that these OVAs may eventually appear on streaming platforms for global audiences.

My Hero Academia – Training of the Dead

A Spooky Adventure as Students Encounter a Zombie Crisis!

The subsequent OVA, “Training of the Dead,”was offered in a special limited edition bundle with Volume 14 of the MHA manga in Japan. This engaging episode begins by retelling a short bonus chapter from Weekly Shōnen Jump related to Tsuyu’s earlier experiences in middle school and her social struggles.

The main narrative unfolds after Class 1-A returns from their respective internships. Their routine is interrupted when a group of students from the fictional Isamu Academy High School arrives, including Tsuyu’s childhood friend. This visit leads to a collaborative exercise between the schools, where students are divided into teams:

  • **Team A:** Deku, Tsuyu, Mina, Ochaco
  • **Team B:** Bakugo, Kirishima, Momo, Shoji
  • **Team C:** Todoroki, Hagakure, Ojiro, Koda
  • **Team D:** Iida, Tokoyami, Sero, Sato
  • **Team E:** Jiro, Mineta, Kaminari, Aoyama
  • **Team F:** Students from Isamu Academy

The exercise’s objective is straightforward: outlast rival teams by eliminating them. However, the unique quirks of the Isamu Academy students quickly complicate matters, introducing elements ranging from a tracking hologram projection to a mysterious pink gas that turns participants into “zombies.”

This newly introduced zombie mechanic creates a frantic scenario as the infection spreads rapidly through the teams, leaving only Deku’s and Todoroki’s teams standing. When a desperate Deku decides to unleash his Full Cowl to fend off the zombies, a sudden turnaround defuses the crisis, further intensifying Bakugo’s frustration as the episode culminates in yet another hospital visit for Deku—this time due to a clash with Bakugo.

In addition to the thrilling plot, the episode injects humor reminiscent of the earlier OVA, especially when All Might inadvertently transforms into his powerless form, leading to hilarious misunderstandings about his identity among the students.

These OVAs set the stage for MHA’s growing success, providing a nostalgic glimpse into an earlier chapter of the franchise. Since then, following the explosive rise of the series, all subsequent OVAs have been made available globally, leaving these two special episodes as treasured artifacts of a time when the heroes were still finding their path.
