Leo Simon takes on the role of Ole Klatt in the exciting new dark comedy series, Where’s Wanda?, available on Apple TV+. When Wanda Klatt, played by Lea Drinda, vanishes, Ole teams up with his family in a humorous and action-filled mission to find her, showcasing the show’s German-language origins.
Similar to the dynamic in his on-screen family, Simon shares a willingness to cross boundaries for those he loves.
Experienced comedic talent Axel Stein portrays Dedo Klatt, Ole’s father, while the acclaimed musician Heike Makatsh takes on the role of Carlotta Klatt, his mother. Paralleling their characters, Simon expresses his readiness to break the rules for family:
“Absolutely, I could go to the lengths that Carlotta and Dedo did, perhaps even beyond. What wouldn’t you do to safeguard your family?”
How Does Leo Simon Relate to His Where’s Wanda? Character?
The young actor reveals a strong connection to his character, saying:
“One hundred percent. Ole and I share intelligence and a penchant for risk-taking. We both have been shy, although that has changed for me, which is beneficial. Additionally, like Ole, I communicate using sign language as he is hearing impaired.”
While the central theme of Where’s Wanda? revolves around a teenager’s disappearance, the series maintains a light-hearted tone. When asked whether he feared the comedic elements might overshadow the seriousness of the premise, Simon commented:
“Yes, the show is meant to depict a tragic drama primarily. You can’t ignore that aspect. However, I didn’t want the story to be overly somber, so we aimed to incorporate moments of humor.”
The ensemble cast of Where’s Wanda? brings genuine comedic flair, ensuring that audiences remain entertained throughout the journey to locate their missing family member. Axel Stein’s portrayal of Dedo as a comically endearing character allows the rest of the cast to embrace their humorous sides. Simon shared:
“I believe Axel Stein played a crucial role in that. He’s recognized as a fantastic comedian, and when he brings the humor, we instinctively follow suit.”
Wanda Klatt is portrayed as a vibrant young woman, and a recurring theme in the show examines whether the response would have been as intense had Ole been the one to disappear. When posed with this question, Leo Simon reflected:
“Quite possibly. I can’t say for certain. Ole is a unique individual; he’s hearing impaired and identifies as gay. I wonder how people would react to his disappearance.”
When discussing the challenges of portraying a layered character like Ole Klatt, who grapples with his sister’s absence while also navigating personal identity and sexuality, Simon noted:
“I endeavored to embody Ole and truly resonate with his emotions.”
