Exciting News: Godzilla Card Game Release Set for This Year

The anticipation for the upcoming Godzilla card game is building as we approach its release later this year. The legendary kaiju has seen a resurgence in popularity, fueled by the critically acclaimed Godzilla: Minus One and the successful Monsterverse films produced by Legendary Pictures. With a sequel to Godzilla: Minus One on the horizon and the Monsterverse’s ongoing evolution, Godzilla’s prominence in popular culture is more robust than ever—an impressive feat for a creature towering over 400 feet.

As fans eagerly await more updates, Bushiroad has revealed key details about this exciting new game, which was first hinted at late last year. Set to launch in both Japanese and English on July 2025, the Godzilla Card Game will feature two initial starter decks along with a new line of booster packs. While comprehensive details remain limited, the game art will showcase still frames from a variety of films, spanning classic Showa-era adventures to the more modern Shin Godzilla. The gameplay promises a unique mechanic where players must fend off opponents’ kaiju while maneuvering their own towards victory.

The gameplay will revolve around four distinct card types: Kaiju Cards, Battle Cards, Strategy Cards, and Rage Cards. Players will aim to navigate their Kaiju card across eight spaces while thwarting opponents with their own cards. Kaiju will not only progress forward but will also annihilate any Battle Cards in their way. Interestingly, once defeated, Kaiju cards may have the potential for upgrades. As of now, the exact roles of Strategy and Rage Cards remain somewhat unclear, though some elements incorporate iconic movie poster art.

Victory can be achieved in two ways: either by advancing your Kaiju onto your opponent’s battlefield or defeating their Kaiju. More comprehensive rules are expected to be unveiled soon. Bushiroad is also set to showcase the Godzilla Card Game at several upcoming events, including Anime Expo in the U.S. Notably, the first “season”of the game is projected to last for one year, suggesting potential annual expansions in the future.

Our Take: A New Challenge for Godzilla

The Godzilla Card Game Enters an Increasingly Crowded TCG Market

While Godzilla has made guest appearances in various trading card games, including Magic: The Gathering and Universus, this takes a significant step as Godzilla’s first dedicated trading card game in years, paired with a unique game system.

Although I hold some reservations regarding the use of movie stills as card artwork, I remain optimistic that alternative card designs will emerge, enhancing the game’s appeal. The Godzilla Card Game is set to launch amidst a burgeoning market of new trading card games this year—its performance, particularly outside of Japan, will be interesting to watch.
