Exciting New Google TV Features Launching Today with Smart Home Integration and More

In August, Google announced the launch of its new video streaming device, the Google TV Streamer, while also discontinuing production of all older Chromecast models, including the Chromecast with Google TV.

This week, the Google TV Streamer officially hits the market with a pricing of $99.99. Concurrently, Google is deploying significant updates to its Google TV operating system for all compatible devices, which includes smart TVs, streaming sticks, dongles, and set-top boxes.

In a blog post, Google indicated that the update is designed to enhance usability for users with smart home devices:

With the revamped home panel on Google TV, you can effortlessly manage all your compatible smart home devices — including lights, thermostats, and cameras — without getting up from your couch. The new doorbell notification feature allows you to see who is at the front door without interrupting your viewing experience. Additionally, if your remote goes missing, you can manage your devices using voice commands via Google Assistant.

Google TV is also introducing generative AI features powered by its Gemini model. Users can access comprehensive overviews of major TV shows and movies, complete with summaries generated by Gemini, along with viewer reviews and detailed seasonal breakdowns of TV shows.

For live sports enthusiasts, a new section in the Google TV’s For You tab will feature not only upcoming live games but also provide access to highlights of previous games through YouTube, along with tailored recommendations and expert commentary.

In addition, there’s a newly designed Ambient screensaver that displays your personal photos via Google Photos while also generating unique screensaver images based on AI text prompts that you input.

Lastly, Google has confirmed updates regarding its free TV channels feature, which is now branded as Freeplay. Along with a refreshed user interface for its channel guide, Freeplay now boasts 150 channels featuring 24/7 content.
