Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a defining entry in the horror-comedy genre, is gearing up for a long-awaited comeback. This iconic series, which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and concluded over two decades ago, is on the brink of relaunching with new episodes intended for Hulu, marking the first return to the storyline since 2003.
Initially premiering in 1997, the show highlighted Gellar’s character, Buffy Summers, as she battled a multitude of supernatural foes, from vampires to demons, including the manifestation of ultimate evil itself. Moreover, Buffy was not alone in her fight; her loyal friends, such as Xander and Willow, regularly assisted her in tackling various threats in what became known as the “Monster of the Week”format. The series achieved immense popularity, spawning numerous spin-offs across various mediums, including books, podcasts, and video games, alongside the concurrent spin-off series, Angel. Despite its conclusion over 20 years ago, the show continues to captivate its fan base, many of whom are eager for a revival — and it seems their wishes may soon be realized.
The Enduring Legacy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer

As reported by Deadline, Hulu is approaching a pilot order that will officially lead to the revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on their streaming platform. Sarah Michelle Gellar is expected to reprise her iconic role, while the project will be in the capable hands of Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, known for her deep appreciation of the original series.
Recently, Gellar was interviewed regarding her thoughts on a potential reboot. Initially uncertain about its feasibility, she expressed openness to the idea should the opportunity arise. It now appears she was privy to an exciting secret all along regarding the revival.
In addition to the pilot, Deadline has indicated a writer’s room is in development, suggesting Hulu’s confidence in the series’ potential appeal, likely envisioning at least one full season of new episodes. Importantly, this revival is not intended as a reboot; instead, it aims to carry on the original narrative.
With confirmation of this new venture, the production team announced that Joss Whedon, the original creator, will not be involved. Once a prominent figure in Hollywood, Whedon has stepped away from public projects since 2021 following serious allegations concerning his conduct.
