Next week marks the 20th anniversary of Halo 2, and in its honor, the latest season of the franchise is set to debut with a celebration of the iconic shooter. Named Operation: Great Journey, this new season will introduce a playlist inspired by Halo 2, showcasing several classic maps alongside original gameplay features such as the absence of sprinting and enabling friendly collisions. Additionally, the highly anticipated third-person mode will be implemented in this update.
“It was twenty years ago that gamers first experienced Halo 2, significantly altering the gaming landscape,”Halo Studios (previously known as 343 Industries) shared in a blog entry. “This multiplayer platform fostered friendships, catapulted online gaming into the mainstream, advanced MLG, and served as a crucial component of early gaming culture and the online community.”
The new Halo 2 playlist, known as Delta Arena, has been recreated with the advanced Forge tools from Halo Infinite, including maps like Ascension, Turf, Lockout, Warlock, Midship, Sanctuary, and Beaver Creek, some of which have received updated names. The gameplay rules have also been tweaked to reflect the authenticity of the experience people enjoyed back in 2004.
This update indicates that players will encounter increased jump heights for Spartans, no clambering or sprinting, and friendly player collision will be enabled. The rotating game modes will include Slayer, Oddball, Capture the Flag, and King of the Hill.
Moreover, the integration of the third-person mode in Halo Infinite begins with the co-op Firefight mode, which will introduce playlists for Fiestafight and Gruntpocalypse King of the Hill. Though only normal difficulty will be available at launch, Halo Studios plans to offer Heroic and Legendary difficulty settings at a later date. Additionally, players can anticipate a completely new camera style in custom games with this update.
In addition to these features, Operation: Great Journey will refresh ranked playlists with the inclusion of two new maps, Inquisitor (Midship) and Fortress. While rumors suggest that Halo Studios has more surprises planned for the season, such as a brand-new weapon, no official announcements have been made yet.
Operation: Great Journey for Halo Infinite is set to launch on November 5 for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
