Exciting News: Excel Introduces Full Dark Mode
Excel users, especially those who often work during late hours, will be delighted to hear that Microsoft has rolled out a comprehensive dark mode feature. This new mode not only transforms the traditional ribbon but also changes the backdrop of all cells within the spreadsheet to a sleek dark color. The introduction of this much-anticipated feature comes in response to numerous requests from users through Microsoft’s feedback portal.
Benefits of the New Dark Mode
In their announcement, Microsoft highlighted several advantages associated with the newly implemented dark mode in Excel:
- Reduced Eye Strain: This mode is particularly beneficial in low-light environments, helping to minimize discomfort during extended use.
- Energy Efficiency: Users with OLED displays will appreciate the pitch-black background, which can enhance overall power conservation.
- Enhanced Accessibility: The dark mode also aims to provide an aesthetically pleasing and uniform appearance across documents.
Switching Between Modes
If you favor the classic white spreadsheet look, Microsoft allows you to easily toggle back to it. To switch between dark and light modes, you can utilize the “Switch Modes”button located in the View tab. Follow these steps:
- Activate Dark Mode by selecting the Switch Modes button in the View tab.
- Open an existing worksheet or create a new one.
- To confirm you have a compatible Office theme, navigate to File > Account > Office Theme and check that either Black or Use system setting is selected. NOTE: If you opt for Use system settings, ensure your Windows theme is also set to Black.
- To activate Dark Mode, select View, then click on Switch Modes.
- To deactivate Dark Mode, simply select View > Switch Modes once more.
Current Availability and Future Updates
This updated dark mode is currently being rolled out to Microsoft 365 Insiders in the Beta Channel, specifically for those using version 2502 and build number 18508.2000 or higher. This rollout reflects Microsoft’s commitment to enhancing user experience across its suite of applications.
Excel isn’t the only application to benefit from this aesthetic upgrade; Word has also received a similar dark mode enhancement, enabling users to work on documents with a darker ambiance. Notably, Word automatically transitions back to light mode when the theme switches or when the document is printed.
