The Long and Winding Road of The Wolf Among Us 2 Development
It is undeniable that The Wolf Among Us 2 has faced significant challenges throughout its development. The initial optimism about the game’s release waned after Telltale Games, the studio behind the title, declared bankruptcy and shut its doors. Nevertheless, the company’s revival reignited hopes for new Telltale projects, allowing work to recommence on this highly-anticipated sequel.
That revival, however, was just the beginning of a drawn-out process. Five years have passed since the game’s initial announcement, and while fans were initially led to believe that it would be ready for release in 2023, a delay has once again set expectations askew. As of now, the gaming community has received little beyond a few appealing screenshots and Telltale’s assurances that the project remains active.
Insights from Former Telltale Developers
Notably, Nick Herman, a former writer at Telltale and now a co-founder of AdHoc, a new studio formed by ex-Telltale collaborators, has shed light on the reasons behind the extended development timeline. AdHoc is gearing up to launch their upcoming title, Dispatch, in October 2023, offering a glimpse into the dynamics at play during the creation of The Wolf Among Us 2.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Herman candidly reflected on the pivotal decision that led AdHoc to shift its focus from collaborating on the sequel to their current project, Dispatch. During this discussion, he expressed optimism about the quality of the script they developed, suggesting that it surpasses the narrative of the original game. He confidently stated that if players were ever able to experience their work, “people would love it.”
Herman explained, “We wrote a season, Season Two, which we believe is superior to Season One — the same Season One we contributed to. We were deeply proud of it.”He elaborated on the creative process, noting that they had moved into testing and were involved in cinematics and animation when Telltale realized they required additional time to complete the project.
“They weren’t… We weren’t running the project. It was Telltale we were doing it in partnership with. And we couldn’t wait around and do nothing, so we had to move on to Dispatch to keep the studio moving.”– Nick Herman
Herman and his team found themselves in a difficult position, as they needed to pivot to keep AdHoc operational.“We’re looking forward to seeing what they do with it, ”he added, acknowledging the uncertainty regarding how much of their original script will be incorporated into the final product from Telltale. Nonetheless, he remains hopeful about the future of the sequel.
What Lies Ahead for The Wolf Among Us 2?
Ultimately, the only individuals who can accurately narrate the current status of Telltale and The Wolf Among Us 2 are those working within the studio. Fans continue to hold onto hope that this story culminates in a successful launch, fulfilling the high expectations set by its predecessor.
