Evil Dead Rise Director Set to Revive The Mummy in Upcoming Film

Upcoming Remake of The Mummy by Lee Cronin

  • Lee Cronin, known for his work on Evil Dead, is set to write and direct a fresh remake of The Mummy, aiming for a more terrifying experience.
  • This rendition will take a darker turn from the 1999 film, focusing on ancient, unsettling themes.
  • The film is scheduled for release on April 17, 2026, and will be produced by New Line Cinema, promising a revitalized interpretation of the classic monster.

The Mummy ranks among the most memorable monster films in cinematic history, and now it awaits a reinterpretation led by the visionary director Lee Cronin.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Cronin is diving deep into the world of horror to craft this remake. While there has been much speculation regarding the potential return of original star Brendan Fraser, many fans cherish the storytelling and unique tone established in the 1999 classic.

In its original version, released in 1999, Fraser played Rick O’Connell, a former military captain who confronts a malevolent mummy. Fraser reprised his role in sequels such as The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).

Lee Cronin shared his enthusiasm about the project with The Hollywood Reporter, stating:

“This will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before. I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening.”

This upcoming film marks Cronin’s third directing venture, following the success of his 2023 film Evil Dead Rise and the 2019 psychological horror The Hole in the Ground. With his expertise in the horror genre, expectations are high for the new The Mummy. Cronin’s previous work on Evil Dead Rise illustrates his impressive ability to capture audience attention; the film grossed over $146 million worldwide against a $19 million budget, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Produced by New Line Cinema in collaboration with Cronin’s company Doppelgängers, alongside Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster, details about the plot remain tightly under wraps. However, fans anticipate a film crafted with a scarier and darker ambiance compared to its 1999 predecessor.

Despite his successful run with Evil Dead, Cronin has expressed interest in exploring new projects. He recently mentioned:

“I put down other original ideas and original screenplays to go and make Evil Dead Rise. So it’s nice to be in this moment where I’m able to look around and think about what’s next.”

The timeless appeal of monster films continues to thrive, as demonstrated by recent projects like Your Monster starring Melissa Barrera, alongside numerous reboots from Universal Pictures. The prospect of a modern take on the mummy mythos adds to the excitement surrounding Cronin’s vision.

With its official release lined up for April 17, 2026, much anticipation surrounds what this new iteration will bring to the genre. Fans and horror enthusiasts alike can hardly wait to witness the transformation of this classic character on the big screen.
