Everything We Know So Far About The Russo Brothers’ The Electric State

The Electric State is an upcoming science-fiction adventure comedy from the Russo brothers, set to premiere on Netflix in March 2025.

This exciting film stars a talented cast, including Chris Pratt, Millie Bobby Brown, Giancarlo Esposito, Anthony Mackie, and Billy Bob Thornton. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity fights for survival after a devastating war against artificial intelligence. In this film, robots find themselves marginalized as outcasts, relegated to an ‘exclusion zone.’

Set in the 1990s during humanity’s attempt to rebuild, the movie follows Michelle, portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown. Her mission is to locate her younger brother, with the official synopsis provided by IMDB stating:

“An orphaned teenager traverses the American West with a sweet, but mysterious, robot, and an eccentric drifter in search of her younger brother.”

It’s worth noting that The Electric State will not have a theatrical release and will exclusively be available on Netflix.

The Russo Brothers’ The Electric State Promises a Thrilling Adventure in a Post-Apocalyptic World

The Electric State presents a near-dystopian reality where humanity is struggling to rebuild while machines rust in the exclusion zone. The film explores themes of loss, technology, and family as Michelle embarks on a perilous journey to find her brother.

Assisting her will be a remote-controlled robot inspired by her brother’s favorite sci-fi character, Kid Cosmo. This machine communicates using the hero’s iconic catchphrases and plays a crucial role in navigating treacherous territories. Along her journey, Michelle will join forces with Chris Pratt’s character, Keats, a war veteran turned trucker, along with Herman, another machine.

Herman, a construction robot who survives as a smuggler in the post-apocalyptic environment, will be voiced by Anthony Mackie. As reported by Vanity Fair, Millie Bobby Brown described Michelle as:

“She’s rebellious and dealing with grief, but she’s still human.”

The Russo Brothers are equally enthusiastic about this project, emphasizing the film’s exploration of the ironic relationship between humans and machines:

“You can recognize humanity in technology, and you can recognize inhumanity in humans. This movie is actually a remarkable bridge for us back to that [superhero] world.”

Moreover, The Electric State will be the Russo Brothers’ final work before rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, collaborating again with Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.

In addition to Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, several other prominent actors will feature in The Electric State. Notable cast members include Woody Harrelson as Mr. Peanut, the leader of the exiled robots, and Jenny Slate as Penny Pal, another robot. Brian Coz will lend his voice to Popfly, a baseball-pitching machine.

Additionally, Ke Huy Quan will portray Dr. Amherst and Stanley Tucci will play Ethan Skate, a once-prominent tech entrepreneur. Jason Alexander will also make an appearance in the film.

As Joe Russo stated regarding The Electric State:

“Humans are using technology to dehumanize themselves, and technology is striving to become human.”

This unique concept is set to showcase the talents of some of the industry’s biggest names, and will be available for streaming on Netflix in March 2025.
