Upcoming on Netflix, Carry-On is an eagerly awaited thriller helmed by director Jaume Collet-Serra, based on a screenplay by T.J. Fixman. The film is produced by Dylan Clark and features executive producers, including Collet-Serra himself, alongside Brian Williams and Seth William Meier.
The plot of Carry-On revolves around a character portrayed by Jason Bateman, who manipulates Ethan Kopek (played by Taron Egerton), a rookie TSA agent. Bateman’s character coerces Ethan into smuggling a perilous package aboard a crowded flight on Christmas Eve. Ethan must act quickly to uncover the mastermind behind this scheme before any serious harm ensues.
According to Netflix, the film’s official synopsis states:
“An airport security agent battles against a mysterious traveler who blackmails him into allowing a dangerous package onto a Christmas Eve flight.”
What should viewers anticipate from Netflix’s Carry-On?
As reported by The New York Times in June 2021, Carry-On marks the first collaboration between Netflix and Amblin Partners, the production company founded by Steven Spielberg, following their agreement to create multiple films each year.
The production kicked off on October 18, 2022, and concluded on December 16, 2022, with filming taking place in both New Orleans, Louisiana, and Cleveland, Ohio.
The action-thriller’s trailer was unveiled by Netflix on October 16, 2024. The anticipated runtime of the film is 1 hour and 59 minutes, and it has a PG-13 rating. Carry-On is set to premiere on Netflix on Friday, December 13, 2024, just in time for the holiday season.
Main star Taron Egerton shared insights about his character in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in October 2024, describing him as “a hero in waiting.”He elaborated on his character’s situation:
“He’s unhappy at work at the airport and feeling flat and dejected about it. He’s also just found out his girlfriend is pregnant, which adds pressure to be a responsible father and provider. He has to confront his feelings of unfulfillment. When placed in a dire scenario, he has a significant chance to rise to the occasion.”
Cast and Characters
The cast features Taron Egerton as the TSA agent Ethan Kopek, known for his roles in major Hollywood hits such as Kingsman: The Secret Service, Rocketman, and Eddie the Eagle. He finds himself in a gripping chase against a mysterious traveler played by Jason Bateman.
Bateman, celebrated for his role as Michael Bluth in the acclaimed sitcom Arrested Development and as Marty Byrde in Netflix’s Ozark, brings depth to his character.
Sofia Carson will portray Ethan’s romantic interest, Nora Parisi, while the supporting cast includes Danielle Deadwyler as Elena Cole, Sinqua Walls as Jason Noble, Logan Marshall-Green as Agent Alcott, Josh Brener as Herschel, and Theo Rossi in a role as a mysterious observer.
Other cast members feature Logan Macrae as Detective Elario, Dean Norris as Phil Sarkowski, Tonatiuh as Mateo Flores, and Curtiss Cook as Lionel Williams. The ensemble also includes Joe Williamson as Ron Dunn, Gil Perez-Abraham as Eddie, Benito Martinez as security director Marm Bellows, Jill Flint as Congresswoman Grace Turner, Edwin Kho as Lance, Adam Stephenson as Jesse, and Spencer Crim as Mr. Herter.
Additionally, Michael Scott will play Samir, Jeff Pope as Olek, Martina Meneses as Maria, and Reisha Reynolds as Nina.
