Netflix’s Our Oceans is a compelling documentary series produced by Freeborne Media, Wild Space Productions, and Higher Ground Productions, known for their Emmy-nominated docuseries, Our Great National Parks. This docuseries is narrated by former U.S. President Barack Obama, who also lends his voice to both documentaries.
Our Oceans is set to debut on the streaming platform on November 20, 2024, as a five-part series.
The documentary explores the “conveyor belt,”referring to the global ocean currents that flow beneath the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Southern, and Arctic Oceans.
This captivating release is part of a broader collaboration between Barack and Michelle Obama with Netflix, beginning with the founding of Higher Ground Productions on May 22, 2018.
Our Oceans Highlights the “Five Oceans”
The world’s five major oceans—the Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Indian, and Southern—cover a significant portion of Earth’s surface. Variations in temperature and salinity across these oceans create deep-sea currents, often referred to as nature’s “conveyor belt,”which are vital for marine life and global biodiversity.
Home to an array of lifeforms including cuttlefish, blue whales, and sea urchins, Our Oceans takes viewers on a breathtaking journey across 75,000 miles, exploring both the expansive and deep regions of the ocean.
This documentary leverages cutting-edge research and innovative filmmaking technology to present an intimate, current perspective on the state of Earth’s oceans and the diverse life that resides within them. As former President Obama aptly states, “You’ll never be the same once you’ve seen it from below.”
Our Oceans Marks President Barack Obama’s Latest Netflix Project
Since launching his media company, Higher Ground Productions, former President Barack Obama has been heavily involved with Netflix, producing both scripted and unscripted content directly associated with his vision.
Higher Ground Productions first debuted with American Factory, a 2019 documentary directed by Julia Reichert and Steven Bognar, which focused on a manufacturing plant owned by the Chinese company Fuyao located in Moraine, Ohio, near Daytona.
In 2020, Higher Ground Productions released Becoming, a documentary showcasing Michelle Obama’s journey promoting her memoir of the same name, directed by Nadia Hallgren and compiled from footage captured during her book tour.
In April 2022, the company ventured into nature documentaries with Our Great National Parks, which highlighted the global national parks and their significance in preserving local wildlife and ecosystems. Similar to Our Oceans, this documentary was narrated by Barack Obama.
Apart from their collaborations with Netflix, Higher Ground Productions has also partnered with Spotify for exclusive audio productions, featuring popular podcasts like Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast, Renegades: Born In The USA, The Big Hit Show: Twilight, and The Big Hit Show: To Pimp a Butterfly. Following the expiration of their Spotify contract in June 2022, Higher Ground Productions signed a new multi-year exclusive agreement with Audible.
Our Oceans is set to stream exclusively on Netflix starting November 20, 2024.
