Although there are already numerous mobs in Minecraft, there are also many additional ones that did not make it into the game. These mobs were considered during a controversial mob vote, but ultimately lost and were placed on a list of potential ideas that may or may not be revisited in the future.
The following is a comprehensive list of all unimplemented mobs in Minecraft, including the limited information we have been given about each one.
Explanation of Status Codes
The game’s unimplemented mobs have four different statuses, each indicating the likelihood of being added to the game. The list of status meanings includes:
Status | Meaning |
Shelved | May or may not be added in future updates. |
Scrapped | Confirmed to never be coming to the game. |
Planned | Confirmed to be coming to the game eventually. |
Unknown | It’s currently not known if these mobs have been shelved or scrapped. |
Minecraft’s Abandoned Mobs
1) Elite Pigment Bodyguard
- Status: Shelved
Currently, there is limited information available on the pigman bodyguards. However, developer Dinnerbone provided some details in 2012 and 2020. In 2012, it was mentioned that a male mob would be introduced in the game, which was later revealed in 2020 to be the naked pigman bodyguard. The decision to keep it naked was made so that players could equip it with armor. Nonetheless, the specific mechanics of the bodyguard’s role are still uncertain.
2) Blue Phoenix
- Status: Unknown
Before the ender dragon final boss was added to the game, there were already hints about dragons being included in Minecraft. As early as 2010, during the Secret Friday Updates, Notch had mentioned the possibility of adding dragons to the game.
The initial concept was for red dragons to appear in the overworld as weaker versions of the ender dragon. These dragons would have the ability to land and move on foot, but were not capable of destroying blocks. Although Dinnerbone has announced that development has been put on hold, he has also expressed his belief that the mob will eventually be added in a future update.
3) Call
- Status: Unknown
Initially, alpacas were planned to be included in the game instead of llamas. However, due to requests from other developers and a widely supported opinion on Twitter, llamas were ultimately chosen to be added instead.
Despite being on this list, the alpaca was one of the few mobs that actually made it into the game. Its name was changed and it received a slight design update, but it has never been officially confirmed whether or not alpacas would be added in the future, leaving their status uncertain.
4) Barnacle Species and Characteristics
- Status: Scrapped
The barnacle was one of several mobs originally proposed in a voting process, but ultimately scrapped. Its inclusion was controversial as it led to the addition of one of Minecraft’s most disliked mobs, the phantom.
The barnacle was a hostile creature found in the depths of the ocean. It would use its long, tentacle-like tongues to attack players and pull them further underwater, ultimately causing them to drown. This added an element of danger to searching for early diamonds in Minecraft’s shipwrecks.
5) The Irish Potato Famine
- Status: Scrapped
The MINECON Earth 2017 vote saw the emergence of Mob C as the top contender. This quadrupedal creature was characterized by its large head and mouth, earning it its name. It was known to lurk underground, patiently waiting for unsuspecting mobs to wander into its jaws, much like a bear trap.
The idea of disenchanting was intriguing as it was the original concept. While in the present game, grindstones serve the purpose of removing enchantments, the great hunger was initially designed to have the ability to remove magical effects from items it consumed.
6) Hurricanes
- Status: Scrapped
Initially known as the Hovering Inferno, these creatures were intended to be formidable blazes with shields, roaming the Nether. It would have likely posed a challenge to defeat, as its body was protected by a shield, making it a unique miniboss.
Similarly to the other scrapped mobs, the Wildfire has also been included in one of the spinoff games. It can be found in the Minecraft Dungeons DLC Flames of the Nether, as well as the Portal Dash board game, which is where the mob’s official name was revealed.
7) African Meerkat
- Status: Planned
The signature mob revealed during the MINECON Earth 2018 biome vote was the meerkat. Mojang has confirmed that all additions voted for in this event will eventually be added, including meerkats and a few other mobs. These additions are guaranteed.
The addition of palm trees and oases to the game’s desert biomes will be accompanied by a new mob. While not much is known about this mob from the short promotional video released by Mojang, it is known that it does not have a preference for fish as a food source. Once implemented, it is sure to enhance the experience of playing Minecraft’s top desert seeds.
8) Flamingo
- Status: Planned
Mojang has confirmed two mobs that will be added to the game’s arid savannas, with ostriches being the first. The announcement also included termites, making the savanna biome the only one to have multiple confirmed mobs coming.
Like numerous other unimplemented mobs, we can only rely on a brief description and a snippet from its biome vote video to gather information about ostriches. These birds appear to be around three blocks tall and exhibit the behavior of burying their heads in the ground, a trait often associated with them for some reason.
9) Cockroach
- Status: Planned
It was confirmed that termites would be the second mob to arrive in savannas in the future. Like the other mobs announced through the biome vote, there is limited information available about termites. However, it is known that their hives will function as a new block, resembling bee nests, and will have the ability to generate tall structures.
In light of Minecraft 1.21’s inclusion of armadillos, many fans have vocally suggested that this would also be a great opportunity to incorporate termites into the game, given that armadillos feed on termites in real life. However, until termites are eventually implemented, armadillos will have to continue consuming spider eyes to craft Minecraft wolf armor.
10) Red-tailed Hawk
- Status: Planned
The vulture was the chosen submission for MINECON Live 2019’s biome vote. It was set to be included in the stunning Badlands biome of Minecraft, along with a stunning new type of cactus. As intended, the vultures would have been able to swoop down and take any items left on the ground by players, posing a nuisance for those with a full inventory.
11) Axolotl
- Status: Shelved
In the 2020 mob vote, Moobloom lost in the first round to the iceologer and glow squid. This variant of a cow was meant to be covered in flowers instead of mushrooms, similar to the mooshrooms found in the rare mushroom biomes of Minecraft. Despite not winning the vote, Moobloom was eventually featured in the AR spinoff, Minecraft Earth, where it held the title of the rarest cow variant.
Despite an unfortunate turn of events, the moobloom not only lost the mob vote, but the spinoff it was featured in was forced to shut down due to COVID-19 restrictions preventing players from going out and playing the game. We can only hope that it will be reinstated in the base game, as its cuteness is undeniable.
12) The Chilling Iceologer
- Status: Shelved
The iceologer is an impressive potential mob that may be added in the future. It was designed to inhabit the game’s mountains and would have attacked players by throwing large chunks of ice. While its drops, if any, remain a mystery, the concept is truly remarkable.
The addition of the iceologer to the Creeping Winter DLC in Minecraft Dungeons was just as exciting as its appearance alongside the wildfire.
13) Bright Light Reflection
- Status: Shelved
The glare was among the options for the Minecraft Live 2021 mob vote, along with copper golems and allays. It was designed as a flying mob that would seek out dark areas where hostile mobs could spawn, becoming agitated to alert the player of potential danger. There was also speculation that it could assist in illuminating the surroundings.
14) Iron Golem
- Status: Shelved
The initial golems introduced through a mob vote were the Copper golems. As implied by its name, players would have been able to create them by using copper, possibly in a manner similar to creating iron and snow golems.
The purpose of the statue was to act as a random number generator by pressing nearby buttons before eventually turning into a solid form through oxidation. The process could be reversed by using an axe or getting struck by lightning, making it one of the rare Minecraft mobs that could be affected by lightning.
15) The Serenity Crew
- Status: Shelved
Despite their small size, fireflies have sparked controversy as one of the most debated unimplemented mobs. Initially planned for 1.19, Minecraft’s firefly was ultimately not included in the update due to concerns that it could harm certain frogs, which was its intended function. However, it has been clarified that the mob has been put on hold rather than completely abandoned.
16) A Mischief-Making Feline: Rascal
- Status: Shelved
The mischievous rascal was a unique mob that did not win the popular vote. It could be discovered underground below Y level zero, engaging in a game of hide and seek with players. If a player successfully located the rascal three times, they would receive an item. Although the complete list of possible drops remains a mystery, the announcement video hinted at an enchanted iron pickaxe. After giving away an item, the rascal would quickly teleport to a new location.
The specific enchantments that the rascal could have bestowed upon tools are currently unknown. However, if it had access to some of Minecraft’s top enchantments such as fortune, silk touch, or mending, it would have been a highly desirable addition.
17) Rock Golem
- Status: Shelved
The tuff golem was created as another golem companion that players could craft. Using different colors of wool during the construction process would result in unique cloaks. These one-block-tall golems were designed to showcase rare or difficult-to-obtain items, providing a creative and captivating method of displaying treasures. Additionally, their small size allowed players to stack them as desired.
18) Blue Crab
- Status: Shelved
The crab, another contender in the 2023 Minecraft mob vote that did not make the cut, was planned to inhabit mangrove swamps alongside frogs. Its unique feature was a disproportionately large claw that players could obtain as an item to increase their block placement range. Additionally, they were intended to be breedable with kelp and would have occasionally waved at both players and other crabs in the vicinity.
19) Wild Penguins
- Status: Shelved
The last of the mobs that were not implemented is the unassuming penguin. It was a creature that could live both on land and in water, appearing on the rocky shores of the game. In aquatic environments, they would have been as swift and elegant as dolphins, but on land, they would have been awkward and prone to tripping while moving. This mob would have had the ability to increase the speed of a player’s boat, functioning similarly to how dolphins grant the “dolphin’s grace”status effect in Minecraft.
