Eva Mendes Admits She Wasn’t a “Great Actress,” Suggests She’d Only Collaborate with Ryan Gosling

In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Eva Mendes revealed her singular condition for a potential return to the film industry: she would only make her comeback if her husband, Ryan Gosling, is part of the project. This statement was made public on Thursday, October 17, 2024.

Mendes has an established filmography, including notable films such as Hitch (2005) and The Other Guys (2010). Her paths crossed with Gosling in 2011 during the filming of the crime drama The Place Beyond the Pines, where they portrayed a romantic couple. Their captivating chemistry on screen blossomed into a strong relationship off-screen, and they have been a devoted couple ever since.

The couple collaborated once more in the 2014 fantasy thriller Lost River, a film that Gosling wrote, directed, and produced. However, that marked Mendes’ last appearance in a film as she decided to step away from the industry following the birth of their first child later that same year.

Reflecting on her acting career, Mendes shared her sentiments in her interview with The Sunday Times, stating:

“I was never in love with acting. I don’t mean this in a self-deprecating way, but I wasn’t a great actress. I had my moments when I worked with really great people.”

She articulated that her work with Gosling was among her proudest moments, expressing that he brings out a side of her that she had not accessed before. After discussing her feelings about being typecast in her decade-long career, Mendes hinted that she would consider returning to acting projects if they involve Ryan. She mentioned:

“That’s the one thing I would love to do.”

Eva Mendes Takes on an Acting Coach Role for Ryan Gosling

While Mendes may not hold herself in high regard as an actress, she occasionally steps into the role of acting coach for Ryan Gosling. In her conversation with The Sunday Times, she recounted giving her husband some performance advice for his role as Ken in the upcoming film set alongside Margot Robbie’s Barbie. She noted:

“I would simplify everything. I’m like, ‘Just make Barbie notice you, that’s what Ken is all about.’ So then there was this desperation. He really loved that. I’d remind him, as he’s literally walking out the door, ‘Make Barbie notice you, make Barbie fall in love with you.’

Mendes’ guidance has certainly been well-received by Gosling. In April 2024, during a red carpet event for his film The Fall Guy in Los Angeles, he expressed his gratitude for her contributions to his acting career. Although he was at the event alone, sharing that Mendes was home with their daughters, he stated, “I couldn’t be here without her.”He applauded Mendes for her coaching skills, declaring:

“[She has] become the best acting coach I have ever had. It’s endless how much she helps me.”

In addition to her acting mentorship, Mendes had one specific request for Gosling while he filmed The Fall Guy, where he portrays a stuntman. She and their children approved of his participation in a stunt film, but they asked him to steer clear of stunts involving fire.

Since stepping away from Hollywood, Eva Mendes has been busy with various ventures. Alongside coaching her husband, she started a cleaning business, lent her voice to the animated series Bluey, and published a children’s book titled Desi, Mami, and the Never-Ending Worries.
