When it comes to privacy, Meta and its AI functionalities often raise concerns among users. Many have found out the hard way that their dialogues with Meta AI could be visible to the public through the Discover Feed. If safeguarding your conversations is a priority, it’s essential to adjust your settings to ensure that your Meta AI chats remain confidential.
Understanding the Discover Feed
The Discover Feed serves a purpose that goes beyond basic interactions. Unlike traditional chatbots that only facilitate Q&A, Meta AI attempts to foster a more communal experience, taking advantage of the social media landscape owned by Meta.
What might surprise users is that the Discover Feed is not exclusive to friends; it is accessible to all Meta AI users. This means that anything you share has the potential to be viewed by a broader audience. While the concept of the Discover Feed can be beneficial for discovering the capabilities of Meta AI and how others engage with it, many individuals might prefer to keep certain aspects of their conversations private.
How to Prevent Sharing of Your Meta AI Chats
While your interactions with Meta AI are stored to customize your experience, you have the power to control what you share publicly. Users can sometimes find themselves inadvertently sharing a conversation due to the app’s prompts.
To maintain the confidentiality of your Meta AI chats, avoid pressing the Share button. If a share request appears, simply close the pop-up window. If it doesn’t show up at all, refrain from clicking the Share button located in the upper right corner.
Although a warning is supposed to inform you prior to sharing something, it doesn’t appear consistently. In the example below, observe that there’s no cautionary note above the Post to feed button.

Disabling Default Sharing of Chats
Concerned about mistakenly hitting the Share or Post to feed buttons? Many users, including myself, have experienced this. Unfortunately, the current setup doesn’t permit selective opt-outs for sharing; it’s all or nothing.
To make your chats private, tap your profile icon located at the upper right corner of the Meta AI app. Navigate to Data & privacy > Manage your information > and select Make all public prompts visible to only you. Then hit Apply to all.

Your previously shared prompts now become private. While they’ll remain accessible in your chat history, they won’t be public in the Discover Feed.
If you wish to erase all your prompts rather than just privatizing them, simply tap Delete all prompts.
Removing or Unsharing Public Chats
If you wish to keep select chats public while making others private, there’s no need to opt-out entirely. Instead, you can delete or unshare specific conversations.
Access the History tab at the bottom center of the Meta AI app. Look for chats marked with a blue Public tag, indicating they are visible in the Discover Feed.
By long-pressing any chat labeled public, you have the option to select Make visible only to you, allowing you to keep the chat while removing it from public view. Alternatively, tap Delete to permanently remove it.

Directly Deleting Chats from the Discover Feed
If you accidentally shared content, you can quickly rectify the mistake by going to the Discover Feed. Tap on the Discover Feed tab located at the bottom left corner and select the three dots at the top of your post. From there, you can either choose Make visible only to you or Delete.

How to Share Chats Exclusively with Friends
To share chats with friends, you currently need to make the chat public by first posting it to the Discover Feed. Then you can either long-press the chat in your history or click the three dots next to your post in the Discover Feed. From here, select Share and choose the intended platform for sharing.
Be aware, this approach renders your chat public. If you subsequently remove it from the Discover Feed, any friends you shared it with will also lose access to it.
The Meta AI app lacks a straightforward method to share chats directly with friends on other Meta platforms such as Facebook or Instagram, which could be a downside. For the moment, a workaround is necessary; you can copy or save your content and share it elsewhere. For instance, you can save images by selecting Save for each one, or simply take a screenshot of your chat and share it as an image.

This alternative may not be as convenient as directly sharing from the Meta AI app, but it does provide greater control over what you disclose, reducing the risk of embarrassment from unintended public shares.
Should you wish to enhance your experience using Meta AI, consider leveraging it effectively within WhatsApp or explore the capabilities of alternative AI platforms like Perplexity AI integrated with WhatsApp.
