Jinwoo’s initial encounter with Esil took place on the 80th floor of the Demon Castle, where she and her group attempted to assassinate him. Although clad in armor, Jinwoo was unable to discern their true forms. However, just as he was about to strike Esil down, her armor unexpectedly fell away, revealing her unexpectedly innocent appearance. Surprised, Jinwoo opted to spare her life. Esil, recognizing the disparity in their power, pleaded for mercy, demonstrating her humanity and vulnerability.

While her pleas for leniency suggest a certain cowardice, Esil’s character also appears self-serving, as she continuously seeks opportunities to retaliate against Jinwoo despite his earlier mercy. Nevertheless, Jinwoo remains unfazed by her attempts at betrayal, understanding that her S-Level threat status does not equate to the strength required to pose a real danger to him.

“I’ve been curious for a while now. Do magic beasts feel fear?” – Sung Jinwoo

Although Jinwoo eliminates every adversary encountered in the Demon Castle, he finds himself searching for the necessary access permit to the 80th floor. Recognizing Jinwoo’s plight, Esil offers her assistance in exchange for her life. From that moment on, she accompanies him throughout his perilous journey. As they progress, Esil ultimately lets go of her vendetta against Jinwoo, gravitating toward admiration rather than animosity as he decimates foes with apparent ease.

Jinwoo Before the Demon Castle

After the 80th floor, Esil takes on the role of Jinwoo’s guide. During their expedition, Jinwoo inquires if she actually belongs to the Demon Castle. In a surprising revelation, Esil confides that both she and her clan were taken from their homeland and brought to the castle under mysterious circumstances. They are originally from a demon realm and find themselves at a loss as to why they’re in the Demon Castle. Like other monsters, they have been compelled by a mysterious voice urging them to kill humans ever since their arrival.

Before Esil can expand on this strange phenomenon, her connection to this voice overwhelms her, glitching her out similar to what happened with Baruka in the Red Gate Arc, except with more dire consequences as she loses consciousness. Following this, an onslaught of enemies coordinates to eliminate Esil, but Jinwoo again intercedes, effortlessly dispatching them.

“Just like with Jin-Ho, am I somehow compatible with people who have clumsy personalities or something?” – Jinwoo

Despite her previous ambitions to kill Jinwoo, Esil witnesses his unwavering commitment to safeguard her, generating a sense of loyalty within her. This transformation in her character is evident when they reach the ominous 100th floor to confront Baran, the chief of the Radiru clan and the looming final boss of the Demon Castle.

As the confrontation unfolds, Esil faces a critical decision: support her superior, Baran, who currently holds the advantage, or stand by Jinwoo, who has consistently protected her. In a moment of clear allegiance, she elects to aid Jinwoo by tossing a dagger at Baran, thereby providing Jinwoo the opening he needs to deliver a fatal blow to the Demon King. Esil’s newfound loyalty culminates in a triumphant conclusion; with Baran defeated, the Radiru clan emerges as dominant figures in the demonic hierarchy of Solo Leveling. Thus, a character initially portrayed as cowardly and selfish evolves into a hero for her clan.
