Anticipation Builds for EXODUS: A Sci-Fi RPG with Depth
As we approach the expected release date for EXODUS, an action RPG created by Archetype Entertainment and inspired by the beloved Mass Effect series, developers are progressively unveiling intriguing details. In a recent discussion with Gamesradar, Narrative Director Drew Karpyshyn, a writer from the original Mass Effect trilogy, emphasized the importance of meaningful side content that resonates with the game’s main themes and characters.
Side Quests with Purpose
Karpysn conveyed the development team’s commitment to ensuring that side quests in EXODUS are engaging and intrinsic to the narrative. He stated, “We don’t want things to feel tacked-on. We definitely don’t want players to engage in these tasks merely out of obligation or for experience points. Our aim is for these quests to offer genuine interest, encouraging players to explore and invest time, not simply for rewards.”
A Focus on Core Themes
During the interview, Karpyshyn further explained that while the game will feature a deep lore, the narrative will spotlight a select range of themes from a much larger universe. The development team has been diligent in managing the expansive narrative potential, including pre-existing materials like The Archimedes Engine and the upcoming book The Helium Sea, alongside a tabletop RPG adaptation.
Balancing Depth and Gameplay
Karpyshyn acknowledged the critical balance between creating a rich narrative experience and delivering a playable game. He noted, “You take a couple of core themes that you want to explore, and then you have to gauge reactions within the team and from players as they engage with the intellectual property. It’s essential to not attempt to cram everything into one game; otherwise, it risks becoming overwhelming.”
Looking Ahead
This strategic development approach hints at potential future installments. However, Archetype Entertainment must first ensure that the initial release operates smoothly and receives positive reception before Wizards of the Coast considers greenlighting additional titles.
