Windows Firewall Control is a handy application designed to enhance the capabilities of the Windows Firewall, providing users with quick access to frequently used options. It operates from the system tray, making it easy for users to manage the built-in firewall without the hassle of navigating through multiple menus. This tool is particularly effective for users of Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, and Server 2022, 2019, 2016, and 2012, offering streamlined firewall management.
In June 2018, Malwarebytes acquired Windows Firewall Control. As a result, the integration of Binisoft’s application into the Malwarebytes platform enables easier deployment and ongoing management of security solutions. Post-acquisition, the fully-featured version of Windows Firewall Control is now available at no cost, and the notification system is free without the need for activation.
Windows Firewall Control features four distinct filtering modes that users can switch between with a single click: High Filtering – Blocks all outgoing connections; Medium Filtering – Restricts outgoing connections that don’t match any set rule; Low Filtering – Permits outgoing connections that don’t align with any rules, allowing users to block specific applications; and No Filtering – Disables the firewall entirely, which should be avoided unless another firewall solution is in place. Additionally, the program boasts a variety of features:
- An easy-to-navigate interface conveniently located in the system tray, next to the system clock.
- Full compatibility with standard user accounts, requiring elevated privileges only during installation.
- Ability to prevent other applications from adding rules to Windows Firewall.
- Multiple simplified methods for creating new Windows Firewall rules.
- A lock feature that restricts access to both the program and Windows Firewall settings.
- Integration into the right-click context menu for easier rule management.
- Option to identify and quickly remove invalid firewall rules.
- Ability to combine similar rules or duplicate existing ones.
- Rapid search functionality for executable files in directories to create rules within seconds.
- Access to recently allowed and blocked connections, allowing for new rule creation directly from the Security log.
- Preference for the program to start automatically upon user logon.
- Options for importing, exporting, and restoring firewall rules, whether individually or in bulk.
- Protection against unauthorized uninstallation.
- Capability to revert settings upon uninstallation.
- Support for global hotkeys and customizable shortcut keys.
- And many more features – experience it for yourself!
Additional Specific Features:
- A Notifications System that alerts users about outbound connections being blocked with four available modes:
- High – Notifies about all outgoing connections that were blocked, including those from System and svchost.exe.
- Medium – Only notifies users about blocked connections from regular applications, excluding System and svchost.exe notifications.
- Low – Automatically allows connections from digitally signed applications, notifying only for unsigned ones.
- Disabled – Turns off all notifications.
- Ability to create temporary rules that auto-delete upon expiry or program restart.
Changes in Windows Firewall Control 6.12.0:
- New: Introduced a ‘Skip loopback and multicast’ option in the Connections Log to filter these types of connections from results.
- Fixed: Corrected an error where remote address/port were swapped with local ones for inbound connections in Windows 10/11 and Server 2019/2022.
- Fixed: When switching to the High Filtering profile, a manual refresh is necessary to view special rules created for this profile in the Rules Panel.
