Windows 11 Version 24H2 Now Available: Upgrades and Resolved Issues
Microsoft has officially rolled out the Windows 11 version 24H2 for all users with compatible hardware. Despite this widespread availability, many users have encountered a range of known issues and upgrade blocks that hinder their ability to update their systems. Fortunately, Microsoft is actively working to address these problems, and recently, one significant upgrade block has been lifted.
Removal of Upgrade Blocks Related to Ubisoft Games
The Windows Health Dashboard has been updated by Microsoft to inform users that the upgrade block for Windows 11 version 24H2—initially caused by compatibility issues with select Ubisoft games—has been fully removed. Previously, this block had been partially lifted in early December 2024.
In November 2024, issues were reported regarding games such as Star Wars Outlaws and Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, where users experienced problems like freezing during gameplay or a persistent black screen. In collaboration with Ubisoft, Microsoft has worked towards resolving these bugs through game updates, allowing for an eventual full rollout of Windows 11 version 24H2.
What to Do If You Have Ubisoft Titles
If you own Ubisoft games on your PC, it is essential to update them to their latest versions before proceeding with your Windows updates. Here are specific updates that address the previously reported issues:
Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora are no longer impacted by this issue following temporary hotfixes from Ubisoft. Although these fixes should prevent crashes, players may still notice some performance hiccups. For further details, consult the release notes for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora – Title Update 1.2 and Star Wars Outlaws – Title Update 1.4.0. The safeguard hold (ID 54580160) for these titles was lifted on December 5, 2024.
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, Origins, and Valhalla are also no longer affected by this issue, thanks to updates rolled out by Ubisoft. These patches have resolved the compatibility challenges with Windows 11 version 24H2, enabling players to enjoy these games smoothly. The prior safeguard hold (ID 54437462) was lifted as of January 16, 2025.
Updating Your System
Even with the removal of specific upgrade blocks, some users may still find that Windows Update takes a while to offer version 24H2. To expedite the process, it is advisable to restart your system. Alternatively, an in-place update can be accomplished using the Media Creation Tool or a Windows 11 installation image.
Remaining Issues and Workarounds
It is important to note that certain gaming-related upgrade blocks persist, including problems with Auto HDR. Microsoft continues to work on a resolution for this particular issue. However, for those anxious to update, a straightforward workaround exists while a permanent fix is underway.
