Recently, Google has introduced an exciting update that significantly enhances the functionality of Gemini in Sheets. This feature allows users to modify their spreadsheet data and layout more intuitively. Instead of sifting through menus in search of specific formatting options or data manipulation tools, users can now simply explain the desired changes to Gemini. This upgrade includes a variety of impactful editing capabilities, such as:

  • Create dropdowns: Simplify data entry by adding validation dropdowns effortlessly. For instance, prompt Gemini with “create a dropdown for product categories in column B.”
  • Apply conditional formatting: Enhance visibility by highlighting critical data points according to custom rules. You might say, “highlight sales above $1000 in green”to draw attention to important figures.
  • Generate pivot tables: Streamline data analysis by generating pivot tables automatically. Ask, “create a pivot table showing total sales by region”for a comprehensive overview.
  • Apply filters: Tailor your data view with ease. Use a request like “filter the sheet to only show orders placed in April”to focus on specific information.

Streamlined Editing Experience with Gemini

Upon making a request, Gemini swiftly processes the input and provides a preview of the suggested changes within a card format. Users can then review these modifications before confirming them by clicking the “Apply”button. The interface includes an undo option, allowing for adjustments if necessary.

Current Limitations and Rollout Details

At present, Gemini conducts its editing operations on a single table range within a spreadsheet. While the latest update is impressive, Google has noted some limitations, particularly regarding advanced conditional formatting options, multi-select dropdowns, and certain features of pivot tables that might not yet be available.

The rollout of this new feature has commenced, initially reaching users in Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. The complete rollout is anticipated to be finalized within the next few days, with availability for select Google Workspace plans such as Business Standard, Plus, Enterprise Standard, Plus, and users of the Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-ons. Additionally, Google One AI Premium subscribers will have access to these enhancements.
