ChatGPT is making waves in the social interaction domain with its latest update that introduces group chats. This innovative feature allows users to work collaboratively with multiple individuals in a unified space, enhancing the ease of planning, discussing, or addressing challenges within teams or groups. Here’s why you might want to explore the group chat functionality in ChatGPT.
Let’s delve into how you can maximize this new tool.
The Benefits of Group Chats in ChatGPT
Following a successful trial period in selected regions, OpenAI has rolled out group chat capabilities to all users across various tiers, including Free, Go, Plus, and Pro memberships.
Prior to this significant enhancement, ChatGPT’s integration into social messaging workflows was quite limited compared to applications like WhatsApp, which allows direct interactions but lacks group chat functionality with the AI. However, with the introduction of group chats, ChatGPT transforms into a more versatile platform resembling conventional messaging apps.
Group chats offer a seamless experience: instead of sharing screenshots or manually copying and pasting responses from ChatGPT, you can now engage multiple participants in a single thread. This setup provides everyone immediate access to ongoing discussions and encourages collective participation.
Consider this feature in different scenarios: when planning a vacation with friends, ChatGPT can assist in coordinating logistics while everyone contributes their ideas in real time, eliminating the hassle of switching between applications. Similarly, students working together on a project can benefit from brainstorming sessions and receiving instant feedback from ChatGPT, all within one grouped conversation.
Moreover, families can create chat groups to compile shopping lists collaboratively. Each member can add items directly to a shared list, with ChatGPT consolidating everything neatly in one place, enhancing the efficiency of household management.
With group chats displayed distinctly, tracking multiple conversations becomes a breeze, allowing seamless transitions between different chat threads.
Elevating Collaboration with ChatGPT
To start using group chats, you can set them up through either the web platform or the mobile application. Each message in the group chat is driven by ChatGPT 5.1 Auto. Please note that depending on your subscription, there may be rate limits applicable only to responses generated by ChatGPT, not to the general exchanges among group members.
Begin by opening ChatGPT and tapping the user icon at the top right corner of the interface.

Next, click the Start group chat button.

ChatGPT will generate your group chat immediately. If you’re using a PC, a pop-up will provide the group link; for mobile users, you’ll need to click the Invite with link option to access and share the link.

Additions to the group will receive a notification of their inclusion. They must click Start chatting to accept the invite or Ignore to opt out.

You’ll be prompted to enable notifications for group chats, which is advisable to stay updated on conversations.

You can invite up to 20 participants, adequate for most collaborations. Interestingly, you have the option to create a group solely for yourself. This feature is beneficial for managing tasks or log books, like tracking books or movies you want to explore further while chatting with ChatGPT for insights.
Collaborate, Share, and Decide – All in One Platform
Following the creation of your group, initiate discussions just like you would on any chat platform. ChatGPT will monitor the conversation and participate only when contextually appropriate, leaving personal exchanges uninterrupted.
For example, I engaged in casual greetings with friends without interruption from ChatGPT, though there were instances where the AI interjected beneficially. Like any AI, occasional misunderstandings can occur.
To minimize unnecessary AI involvement, you can customize settings by tapping the profile images at the top right and selecting Customize ChatGPT.

Change the Respond setting to When mentioned to ensure ChatGPT only replies when tagged.

With this adjustment, you’ll need to use @ChatGPT to solicit a response. Other group members can do the same to enhance interaction efficiency.
ChatGPT’s group chat allows you to share images and files, significantly enhancing collaborative efforts. For instance, you can ask a roommate to review your list of required furniture while seeking ChatGPT’s input on affordable options.

Any participant can prompt the AI for image creation or web searches, enabling collective evaluation of results. Plus, features like leaving voice messages enhance communication fluidity, similar to other popular chat applications.
I also value the ability to add reactions or respond to individual messages, mirroring functionalities app users are accustomed to in WhatsApp.

However, it’s worth mentioning the current limitation of not being able to edit messages, as one typically would in regular ChatGPT sessions. Message deletion is restricted to the web version at this moment.
Maintaining Privacy During Collaboration
Concerns about ChatGPT inadvertently sharing private information in group chats were initially on my mind. Fortunately, OpenAI ensures that your ChatGPT memory is inactive in these contexts, which has, so far, proven reliable.
Additionally, unlike some messaging apps that add users to groups without consent, ChatGPT prioritizes user control. You must accept any group invitation actively. If you choose to exit a group at any point, removing yourself is straightforward.
To leave a group chat, click the menu icon in the upper left corner of the app or the ChatGPT icon in the web version.

Look for your conversation in the Group chats section.

Click on the profile icons at the top right and choose Leave group.

Furthermore, you hold the authority to remove any disruptive members (excluding the creator) by accessing the same menu. On iOS, tap People, or on Android, choose View members.

Select a member and then tap Remove from group.

To ensure the safety of young users, ChatGPT provides parents with the option to control whether their children can participate in group chats. Adults can manage this feature through the Parental Controls section of the app.

Additionally, to enhance your productivity further, consider leveraging scheduled tasks in ChatGPT. You can find our guide on how to set one up.
