Employees warn: Apple’s AI development trails competitors by more than two years

Apple Intelligence has emerged as a leading contender in the ongoing AI competition against tech titans like Meta, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI. This AI framework was initially unveiled during the WWDC 2024 event in June, and it will see a partial rollout with the arrival of the iOS 18.1 update next week, offering select functionalities for compatible devices. However, users will need to wait until early 2025 to experience the complete suite of features associated with Apple Intelligence.

Although the introduction of Apple Intelligence is a notable enhancement for supported iPhones, it’s improbable that it will significantly disrupt the market, especially when set against competitors such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini. Reports indicate that even some employees within Apple feel that the company is trailing its peers in the realm of AI advancements.

According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, sources within Apple have shared findings that suggest ChatGPT outperforms Siri by 25% in accuracy and can respond to 30% more queries. These insights have led staff to believe that Apple is more than two years behind its leading rivals.

Evaluating the offerings from competing companies reinforces the sentiments expressed by skeptical Apple employees. The forthcoming iOS 18.1 update will introduce features like a Photos Clean Up tool, Enhanced Writing Tools, and summary capabilities for texts and notifications on compatible devices. Admittedly, these features might not impress an iPhone 16 user in conversations with Android peers.

Nonetheless, underestimating Apple’s potential in the AI landscape could prove to be a miscalculation. While the tech giant may not always lead in innovation, its history shows a consistent ability to not only catch up but also excel beyond the competition. With opportunities to attract top talent and broaden the availability of its AI toolkit to more devices—such as M4 Macs, new iPads, and the anticipated iPhone SE 4—Apple is strategically poised to bridge the gap.
