Microsoft has commenced the rollout of Windows 10 KB5072653, a crucial out-of-band emergency update. This update aims to enhance the compatibility of installing the Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10, particularly addressing the 0x800f0922 error that has hindered enterprise PCs from successfully implementing these updates.
According to insights shared by Windows Latest, the KB5072653 update serves as a “Licensing Preparation Package for Windows 10.” Its primary function is to enable corporate-licensed devices to apply the Windows 10 ESUs, including the essential KB5068781 update released on November 11, 2025.

This update, labeled as “2025-11 Security Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5072653), ” has a minimal size of 361 KB.
Resolving the 0x800f0922 Error in Windows 10 ESU Installation

Recent confirmations from Microsoft have highlighted that a bug previously prevented the successful installation of the KB5068781 (November 2025) update on enterprise systems with specific licensing arrangements. This update contains critical security enhancements but was blocked by the persistent 0x800f0922 error on ESU-participating devices.
It’s important to note that this issue differs from previous problems reported by Windows Latest. While earlier tests indicated a blockage in ESU enrollment, Microsoft has resolved that particular concern. The current issue does not impede ESU enrollment itself, rather it disrupts the installation of the updates.
In an official communication on the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, intended for enterprise access only, Microsoft acknowledged the existence of an issue barring the installation of ESU updates like KB5068781 due to the 0x800f0922 error.

This classic error is not uncommon and can emerge on various systems. In this instance, the 0x800f0922 error is associated with CBS_E_INSTALLERS_FAILED and primarily impacts enterprise PCs activated through Windows subscription licensing.
“Devices running Windows 10 that are enrolled in Extended Security Updates (ESU) may encounter installation failures for the November 2025 security update (KB5068781) due to error 0x800f0922 (CBS_E_INSTALLERS_FAILED), ” Microsoft clarified, specifying this concern is limited to devices activated through subscription methods.
In essence, the 0x800f0922 error affecting Windows 10 ESU installations pertains specifically to systems upgraded from the Pro edition to the Enterprise Edition or from Pro Education to Education Pro. Systems that have remained on either the Pro or Enterprise edition since their inception are unlikely to experience this error.

In an update to the support documents, Microsoft has clarified that the Windows 10 KB5072653 (out-of-band update) is now available to rectify ESU-related errors for devices activated through Windows subscription licenses.

“Organizations experiencing this issue can resolve it by installing KB5072653: Extended Security Updates (ESU) Licensing Preparation Package for Windows 10, released on November 17, 2025, ” Microsoft indicated in a support document recently highlighted by Windows Latest.
“Upon the installation of this preparation package (KB5072653), users will be able to deploy the November 2025 security update (KB5068781), ” the company confirmed.
Microsoft emphasizes that KB5072653 is a mandatory update. Our analysis has shown that following a recent reboot and internet connection, the update was already queued for installation on my system.

Interestingly, even users like myself with a Windows 10 Home license are seeing the installation of KB5072653, which is tailored for corporate systems facing ESU errors. Microsoft confirms that Windows 10 KB5072653 will roll out across all devices without altering settings on Home, Pro, Enterprise, or Education PCs activated through non-subscription methods.
