SpaceX is increasingly emerging as a crucial player in Elon Musk’s expansive vision for space exploration and technology. Recently, the billionaire entrepreneur made headlines by completing a groundbreaking acquisition of xAI for $250 billion, elevating SpaceX’s valuation to an impressive $1 trillion. This acquisition marks a significant step toward establishing AI data centers in space, highlighting SpaceX’s ambition to intertwine artificial intelligence with space technology.

As Musk’s aspirations unfold, there is growing speculation regarding the potential launch of a dedicated Starlink phone, a move that could revolutionize satellite connectivity.

According to a recent report by Reuters, SpaceX is considering the development of a dedicated Starlink phone, referencing insights from three independent sources. This initiative is reinforced by Elon Musk’s comment, indicating that a Starlink phone is “not out of the question at some point, ”suggesting an openness to innovation in this area.

“It would be a very different device than current phones. Optimized purely for running max performance/watt neural nets.”

Musk’s statement implies that the envisioned Starlink phone would diverge from conventional smartphones, aligning more closely with emerging AI devices that prioritively function in neural networking applications.

Though SpaceX has already partnered with T-Mobile to enhance Starlink connectivity for existing devices, the proposition of a dedicated Starlink phone signifies a bold advancement in their connectivity strategy.

Additionally, SpaceX has recently submitted a comprehensive request to the FCC seeking permission to deploy “a constellation of a million satellites designed to function as orbital data centers.”This ambitious plan aims to leverage continuous solar energy in space for AI computing tasks, reminiscent of theoretical Type II civilizations on the Kardashev scale which would utilize a Dyson sphere—a structure designed to harness a star’s total energy output. Unlike a Dyson sphere, however, these satellites would orbit Earth.

Moreover, the FCC has granted SpaceX approval to operate up to 15, 000 second-generation (Gen2) Starlink satellites, allowing for the launch of around 7, 500 additional units. This expansion is poised to enhance SpaceX’s capabilities dramatically.

For those unfamiliar with the advancements, the Gen2 Starlink satellites are designed to offer:

  1. A 20-fold increase in data throughput.
  2. Direct-to-Cell connectivity, enabling Gen2 satellites to communicate with standard mobile devices without requiring modifications.
  3. Enhanced orbital maneuverability accompanied by an autonomous collision avoidance system.

Furthermore, there is an increasing probability that SpaceX’s Starlink technology will support direct-to-cell connectivity features in the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models. Insights from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggest that next-generation iPhones are expected to incorporate 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) capabilities, which would allow conventional cell towers to utilize satellite connectivity to broaden their service areas.

As SpaceX continues to innovate at an astonishing pace, the potential launch of a dedicated Starlink phone coupled with the advancements in satellite technology could reshape the landscape of mobile communication.
