In a groundbreaking announcement, Elon Musk has shared the tentative launch date for Tesla’s highly anticipated robotaxi service, along with details regarding the delivery of Tesla vehicles directly to customers’ homes. According to Musk’s post on X, the official rides for Tesla’s robotaxi service are expected to commence on June 22. However, he cautioned that this date may shift as safety remains a top priority. Following this, on June 28, the first Tesla vehicles will autonomously travel from the factory to their new owners’ residences.

Interestingly, June 28 occurs 69 days after April 20, commonly known as “4/20, ”a day celebrated by cannabis enthusiasts. Musk’s knack for humor adds a delightful twist to the announcement.

Advanced Technology Behind Tesla’s Robotaxis

The robotaxi initiative will utilize Tesla’s unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability, which is poised for release with the newest Hardware 4 (HW4) vehicles. During Tesla’s Q1 2025 earnings call, Musk emphasized the advancements in HW4 technology, specifically its ability to count individual photons. This capability significantly enhances the FSD system’s resilience against visual challenges, such as sun glare.

Safety Measures and Competitive Landscape

Tesla appears to be taking a cautious approach to the rollout. Recently, a report surfaced of a Tesla robotaxi being observed in Austin, accompanied by a tail vehicle, indicating that this might be a standard procedure during the initial phase of deployment. Furthermore, reports suggest that a remote operator will be available to take control of the FSD system if necessary. For its initial rollout, the service will be confined to specific geofenced areas in Austin, Texas.

While these safety protocols are commendable, they may present challenges for Tesla in competing against established players like Waymo, which operates a fleet of approximately 1, 500 vehicles nationwide. In an effort to reduce operational costs, Waymo is transitioning from luxury Jaguar I-Pace vehicles to more economical Toyota models.
