Ellen Pompeo is globally acclaimed for her portrayal of Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy. However, her upcoming role marks a significant departure from her iconic character. After officially stepping back as a series regular in season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy, Pompeo continues to provide voiceovers, while the focus on Meredith’s journey remains central, particularly evident with the Alzheimer’s research narrative in the show’s future seasons.
Prior to her tenure on Grey’s Anatomy, Pompeo showcased her talent in a variety of films and shows, including the 2002 hit Catch Me If You Can and the 2003 superhero film Daredevil. Her leading role in Grey’s Anatomy arguably overshadowed her ability to pursue diverse projects. Nevertheless, through her long-standing association with the show, Pompeo has directed episodes in seasons 13 and 14 and became an executive producer in 2022. This shift allows her to explore new opportunities, as evidenced by her upcoming role in a Hulu true crime drama.
Ellen Pompeo’s First Lead Role After Grey’s Anatomy in a True Crime Drama
Portraying Kristine Barnett in Hulu’s Good American Family

In Hulu’s upcoming limited series Good American Family, Ellen Pompeo takes on the role of Kristine Barnett. This true crime drama is inspired by a real-life case that gained media attention in September 2019. The series explores Kristine and Michael Barnett’s controversial adoption of Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian child with a rare form of dwarfism. The narrative unfolds the Barnetts’ shocking allegations against Natalia, their decision to secure her an apartment, and their eventual move to Canada with their biological children. The show ambitiously alternates between the perspectives of both the Barnetts and Natalia Grace.
Set to premiere on March 19, 2025, Good American Family will feature its first two episodes on Hulu.
In addition to her starring role, Pompeo also serves as a producer on this eight-part true crime series. Discussing her involvement, she revealed to Vanity Fair that she faced “a tremendous amount of pressure, ” questioning her ability to step beyond her portrayal of Meredith Grey. Despite her initial fears of the project being “a land mine, ” Pompeo felt compelled to take the risk to showcase a different facet of her acting skills, emphasizing her desire to prove herself.
Exploring the Contrast: Kristine Barnett vs. Meredith Grey
Pompeo’s Gritty Transformation in Good American Family

In her portrayal of Kristine Barnett, Pompeo aimed to embody a character that is not traditionally sympathetic. She shared that it was a transformative experience, requiring her to venture into darker emotional territories. To better understand her character’s motivations, she sought guidance from co-showrunners and executive producers Katie Robbins and Sarah Sutherland. Pompeo’s commitment to a nuanced interpretation reflects her desire to approach the character with empathy, avoiding a simplistic judgment.
While Meredith Grey often navigated morally ambiguous situations, she ultimately remains a heroic figure within the narrative of Grey’s Anatomy. In contrast, the storyline of Good American Family inherently possesses a darker tone. The complexities of the true crime genre set this series apart, making Pompeo’s transition into this role even more compelling.
