Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch Makes an Unexpected Return to the MCU in 2025

In an exciting development for Marvel fans, it has been officially announced that Elizabeth Olsen will reprise her iconic role as the Scarlet Witch in 2025. However, her return will come through an unexpected avenue, stirring anticipation and speculation among viewers. Even though Scarlet Witch’s character faced a tragic end in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, many believed that the vastness of the multiverse might offer a path for Wanda Maximoff’s return. After all, we have already glimpsed a version of her in the multiverse during her pursuit of America Chavez in Earth-838, which adds layers to her already complex narrative.

Critics and fans alike have voiced concerns that Scarlet Witch’s story arc was abruptly concluded. Her demise after a clash of villainy and heroism seemed unsatisfactory for a character whose motivations stemmed from deep love, desperation, and the corruptive power of the Darkhold. Consequently, the prevailing worry among fans is that her reintroduction may further emphasize her villainous attributes. Nevertheless, the overwhelming sentiment is joy at her returning presence in the MCU.

Elizabeth Olsen is confirmed to return alongside a formidable roster of MCU characters in the upcoming series Marvel Zombies, set to premiere on Disney+ on October 3, 2025. This animated miniseries serves as a double-spinoff, drawing inspiration from the fan-favorite episode “What if…Zombies?!“from the first season of What If…?. It unfolds in an alternate universe plagued by a zombie outbreak affecting various heroes, and it’s expected to deliver a mature viewing experience with a TV-MA rating.

The storyline of Marvel Zombies is rooted in the acclaimed comic series of the same name, which graced comic book shelves between 2005 and 2006.

In the episode from What If…?, the zombie version of Scarlet Witch emerges as a significant antagonist, creating havoc among the surviving MCU heroes. The last we saw of her, she was battling the Hulk as other heroes like Spider-Man, Ant-Man, and Black Panther attempted to escape, although the final showdown remained off-screen. Given her formidable presence, the anticipation of her return alongside the zombie variant of Thanos, who possesses five Infinity Stones, sets the stage for intense encounters.

While this wasn’t the trajectory I initially envisioned for Scarlet Witch’s comeback, the excitement about her return is palpable. Notably, Elizabeth Olsen has confirmed her role in voicing Scarlet Witch in Marvel Zombies, departing from the typical practice of casting different actors in animated adaptations. During a conversation with Vulture, Olsen expressed her appreciation for her ongoing relationship with the MCU, emphasizing her enthusiasm for engaging in projects that hold personal significance. However, the extent of her vocal performance beyond primal zombie sounds remains uncertain. She shared her sentiments by stating:

I’d never really had the mentality of ‘one for them, one for me.’ Marvel has been such a consistent thing I’ve been able to return to and has created — what’s the word? — some feeling of insurance in my life that has given me freedom to choose other jobs. So I haven’t felt like, ‘And then I’ll do this to do this.’ [It] has always felt like a choice. Every time, it’s character-driven. It’s always like, ‘We have this idea, and that’s why we want you to come back.’ It’s not like, ‘Just throw her in something.’

This latest development is a promising indicator that Elizabeth Olsen’s presence will continue in the MCU, potentially leading to more significant roles in future projects. Her willingness to engage in meaningful narratives, coupled with Marvel’s strategy to keep her involved, fuels speculation that the Scarlet Witch’s comeback in animated form may serve as a launchpad for her eventual return in live-action adaptations. Fans can eagerly anticipate the evolution of this beloved character in forthcoming installments.
