Exciting Developments in The Elder Scrolls Online
In a recent episode of The Elder Scrolls Online podcast, produced in collaboration with Kinda Funny Gamecast, key figures at ZeniMax Online, including Head of Studio Matt Firor and Game Director Rich Lambert, discussed upcoming advancements for the beloved MMORPG. Their focus is on refining the game’s core technology with an eye towards introducing cross-play capabilities in the future.
Possibility of Cross-Play
Rich Lambert: Anything is possible.
Firor acknowledged the importance of cross-play and outlined the studio’s efforts: “We’re working on doing some underlying tech changes that would make it possible. We understand its significance. When we began this project in 2007, the idea of supporting more than two platforms was unimaginable.”
Technological and Logistical Challenges
Lambert provided insight into the complexities involved, stating, “This isn’t simply a technology issue.” Firor elaborated, explaining that implementing cross-play requires navigating numerous agreements between multiple platform holders, making the process much more involved than activating a simple switch. This necessitates extensive discussions about technological handshakes and compatibility.
A Steady Progression Towards a Shared Experience
Past inquiries regarding cross-play reveal a nuanced stance. In a prior interview at Gamescom 2024, Lambert reflected:
Matt Firor: “It’s never been a no; it’s always been a holy hell. Decisions made back in 2007 present substantial hurdles, and we must ensure first-party partners are aligned before proceeding. It’s a gigantic technical puzzle. Will we reach that point in the future? Perhaps. The direction technology is taking emphasizes connectivity and reducing the barriers for players to engage with each other.”
Future Directions for The Elder Scrolls Online
Despite cautious optimism, ZeniMax has not yet confirmed when—if at all—cross-play will be integrated. Nevertheless, the development team appears committed to exploring this possibility. As they evolve, the game is set to transition from its annual expansion model to a seasonal approach, starting this June with the launch of the Seasons of the Worm Cult. This update promises to introduce significant new functionalities, including the much-anticipated feature of multiclassing.
