Dungeons and Dragons has recently released a noteworthy Unearthed Arcana that showcases eight subclasses themed around the Forgotten Realms. This collection includes innovative options such as the Spellfire Sorcerer and College of the Moon Bard, alongside updated versions of classic archetypes like the Knowledge Domain Cleric and Bladesinger Wizard. These subclasses are part of the upcoming Forgotten Realms Player’s Guide, set to launch on November 11.
This latest announcement also highlighted the forthcoming Forgotten Realms Player’s Guide and Adventure Guide, two companion books designed to revisit and expand upon the rich setting of Faerun, recently featured in Baldur’s Gate 3. These guidebooks promise an array of exciting new content, including backgrounds, subclasses, feats, factions, and a powerful new category of spells.
Subclasses Featured in the Forgotten Realms Player’s Guide
- College of the Moon Bard
- Knowledge Domain Cleric
- Purple Dragon Knight Fighter
- Oath of the Noble Genies Paladin
- Winter Walker Ranger
- Scion of the Three Rogue
- Spellfire Sorcerer
- Bladesinger Wizard
In addition to five brand new subclasses, three others have been enhanced from their creations in the Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide (2015).For instance, the Knowledge Domain Cleric now enjoys access to a wider selection of Domain spells, telepathy abilities, and buffs to a variety of D20 checks. The fan-favorite Bladesinger Wizard now allows players to utilize their Intelligence for attack rolls, enabling them to strike foes swiftly after casting spells. On the other hand, the Purple Dragon Knight has undergone a complete overhaul, featuring an Amethyst Dragon companion akin to the Drakewarden Ranger, alongside retained elements of battlefield support.

While these new subclasses introduce exciting mechanics that appeal to fans, they also provoke questions about the adherence to established lore in the Forgotten Realms universe. Historically, the Purple Dragon Knights of Cormyr earned their title through dragon slaying, not befriending them. Additionally, the otherworldly genies of Calimshan have engaged in prolonged conflicts with humanoid races. Notably, Spellfire has traditionally been viewed as a rare gift associated with powerful Chosen of Mystra, such as Elminster. The introduction of these new subclasses may imply potential retcons within the rich narrative of the Forgotten Realms.
Players will have the opportunity to learn more when the Forgotten Realms Player’s Guide and Adventure Guide are released on November 11. In the meantime, feedback on the new Unearthed Arcana will commence on February 4, allowing players to explore and evaluate the subclasses before the feedback window closes.
