Google Vids Enhances Video Editing Directly from Drive
Google has unveiled a convenient new feature in its AI-driven video creation platform, Google Vids, initially launched last year. This update introduces a faster editing option for videos stored in Google Drive. Users can now simply preview a video in Drive and click the “Open”button located in the upper right corner to begin editing directly in Vids.
Streamlined Video Editing Experience
Once the “Open”button is clicked, the selected video automatically imports into Vids, enabling familiar editing tasks like trimming, music addition, and text overlays. Be aware that initiating this editing process generates a new Vids project file, which must be exported in a non-editable format, such as MP4, upon completion.

Editing Limitations to Note
Though the feature is user-friendly, it does have some limitations. Supported file formats currently include MP4, QuickTime, OGG, and WebM. Additionally, individual video clips are restricted to a maximum length of 35 minutes and a size limit of 4GB.
Administrative Access Requirements
For organizations to utilize Vids, administrators must enable it, which is generally activated by default. However, an interesting caveat is that if Google Docs is disabled within your domain, access to Vids will also be revoked.
Browser Compatibility
According to Google, the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox are optimal for using this feature. While Windows users can access Vids on Edge, users on Linux and Mac platforms may encounter limitations. Users may attempt to access it via alternate browsers, but functionality is not guaranteed.
Availability and Workspace Subscription
The rollout of this feature started recently, and users can expect to see it appear within the next two weeks, though availability may vary. Access is granted to subscribers of most Google Workspace tiers, including Business Starter, Standard, and Plus, as well as numerous Enterprise versions, along with customers utilizing Gemini Education or AI Pro and Ultra add-ons.
Recent Enhancements in Google Workspace Media Editing
In related news, Google has also added two new image editing features powered by Gemini to Slides and Vids, enhancing the multimedia editing capabilities within Google Workspace. One feature allows users to replace an image’s background using a text prompt, while the other facilitates the expansion of an image’s background to accommodate new aspect ratios.
