Fans of the acclaimed sci-fi movie Edge of Tomorrow have longed for a follow-up to this thrilling film, yet prior enthusiasm for a sequel from stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt had been notably absent. However, recent comments from Blunt suggest a change in her perspective.

Edge of Tomorrow follows the gripping story of an alien species known as Mimics, which collide with Earth, leading to a catastrophic invasion. Major William Cage (played by Cruise) and warrior Rita Vrataski (portrayed by Blunt) encounter this menace and discover their unique ability to reset time after death. They experience days on repeat, striving to strategize and defeat these formidable extraterrestrial foes. Ultimately, Cage retains this time-manipulating power, allowing humanity to eliminate the alien leader and reclaim the planet.

During a recent discussion with Deadline at an event, Emily Blunt was prompted about her stance on returning for an Edge of Tomorrow sequel. Although she had previously dismissed the idea, her current sentiments indicate a shift towards openness.

Blunt noted, “We’re always throwing ideas around, and I see Doug [Liman] often. I truly like him. I sometimes feel hesitant with sequels; however, if we can either surpass the original or at least match it, I’m intrigued. I still marvel at how Doug was able to get so much creativity from a repetitive day.”

Blunt also acknowledged the demanding stunts and physical challenges they faced during the first film—both she and Cruise endured rigorous training as soldiers using advanced exoskeleton suits to combat the Mimics. As she reflects on the potential of returning, she mentioned, “It would depend on… Could my back handle it after having two children? That’s the real question. We’ll see.”

Despite her reservations about sequels, Blunt’s prior ventures into the sci-fi realm, such as A Quiet Place Part II, indicate her willingness to explore similar themes. Given her participation in projects featuring alien invasions and end-of-world scenarios, it seems that if Liman can devise a fresh and captivating approach for Edge of Tomorrow 2, Emily Blunt may indeed be open to reprise her role.
