Edge Canary for Android now lets you install any Edge extension

Recently, Edge for Android introduced experimental extension support, offering users a limited selection of extensions to enhance their mobile browsing experience.

Despite the great idea, having only two extensions was not enough. However, there is now a solution to the “no-extensions”problem on Microsoft Edge for Android – simply install any desktop extension from the Edge Add-ons store.

The process is not officially endorsed and is not particularly user-friendly. It entails inserting extension IDs into the developer settings within Microsoft Edge Canary for Android.

To satisfy your curiosity, here are the steps for installing any Edge extension on Edge for Android as demonstrated by u/daplugg23 on Reddit:

  1. Visit the Edge Add-ons website and search for the desired extension to install on Edge for Android.
  2. To find your extension ID, first click on the address bar and then copy the portion of the address that comes after the / symbol. For instance, the extension ID for Microsoft Editor is hokifickgkhplphjiodbggjmoafhignh.
  3. You can obtain Microsoft Edge Canary from the Google Play Store by downloading the app at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.emmx.canary&hl=en&gl=US&pli=1.
  4. Open the browser and navigate to edge://flags.
  5. Locate and activate the “Android Extension“flag.
  6. To navigate to Settings > About Microsoft Edge, first restart Edge.
  7. To enable Developer Options, simply tap the build number five times in a swift manner.
  8. Paste the copied ID from step 2 into the designated field labeled “Extension install by ID”.
  9. To access your extension, simply open a new tab and go to any website. From there, open the extension list and you will find your extension ready for use.

It is important to remember that not all desktop extensions are compatible with mobile devices. While some may function properly, others may only partly work or even cause crashes and other issues in the browser.

Experiment with installing various extensions to determine which ones are compatible and which ones are not. Keep in mind that Chrome Web Store extensions are not supported on Microsoft Edge for Android- only extensions from the Edge Add-ons store are compatible.
