Introducing Microsoft Edge 139: Key Updates and Enhancements

Microsoft has officially launched Edge 139 (version 139.0.3405.86) to users within the Stable Channel. This latest update introduces several impactful changes, including enhancements in browser performance and various bug fixes, all aimed at refining the overall user experience. However, the update does come with the removal of certain existing features as Microsoft focuses on creating a more streamlined browser interface.

Revamped Settings Section

One of the most noteworthy changes in Edge 139 is a redesigned Settings section, which now utilizes WebUI2. This new structure facilitates significant improvements in both performance and responsiveness, as highlighted in Microsoft’s recent blog post. However, it also leads to the disabling of a critical graphics feature.

Wallet Discontinuation and Password Management Enhancements

As part of this update, the Wallet feature has been discontinued in Settings, now directing users to a consolidated area labeled “Passwords, Payment, and Personal Information.”A significant upgrade has been made to the built-in password manager, which now delivers real-time notifications for compromised passwords. If one of your passwords appears in a known data breach, Edge promptly alerts you, allowing for immediate action to create a new password.

Additional Notable Features in Edge 139

This release also includes a variety of enhancements:

  • Profile-based External Link Management: When Edge is set as the default browser for opening external links from applications, it now intelligently determines which user profile to use.
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat Policy: A new policy introduces the option to enable or disable the Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat icon in the Edge for Business toolbar.
  • Autofill Personal Information Settings: New configurations in Autofill settings allow users to consent to the collection of web form field labels (e.g., “First Name, ””Email”) to enhance the accuracy of Autofill suggestions.
  • AI APIs for Enhanced Writing Support: The integration of Writing Assistance APIs and a Prompt API supports the use of a local language model, Phi-4-mini, offering developers easy access to AI functionalities through Edge flags.
  • Performance and Secure Network Features: Edge now distinctly separates browser essentials into two categories: Performance and Secure Network, accessible through the Settings menu.
  • Sync Data Reset Option: Users experiencing difficulties with syncing browsing data across devices can now reset their sync information directly from Edge Settings.
  • Policy Update for Microsoft AutoUpdate: The MAUEnabled policy continues to support administrators using Microsoft AutoUpdate on macOS.

Security Improvements

In addition to these updates, Edge 139 addresses eight security vulnerabilities recognized in Chromium. Microsoft has also issued a security guideline regarding a disabled key graphics feature.
