Introducing “Echoes of the End”: A New Fantasy Adventure from Myrkur Games
During the Summer Game Fest 2025, held in June, Icelandic developer Myrkur Games proudly announced their debut title, Echoes of the End. After years of dedicated development, this action-adventure game, built using Unreal Engine 5, will be available tomorrow on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X. The game is published by Plaion (previously Deep Silver).
Plot Overview: A Journey Through Aema
Set in the fantastical realm of Aema, players follow Ryn, a formidable swordfighter with the ability to wield powerful magic, on her quest to rescue her brother from the clutches of a tyrannical empire. Along her journey, Ryn forms a partnership with Abram Finlay, an experienced scholar haunted by his own past.
A Conversation with the Founders
Prior to the launch, we had an enlightening discussion with the founders of Myrkur Games: CEO and Game Director Halldór Snær Kristjánsson and Senior Writer Magnús Fr. Guðrúnarson. They shared insights about the formation of their studio and the vision behind their flagship game.
Halldór Snær Kristjánsson: The three of us met while studying game development at university. This was around 2016, and our first collaborative project sparked our camaraderie. We were passionate about our work, which laid the foundation for what would ultimately become Myrkur Games.
From Concept to Creation
Once established, the team started developing various smaller projects before committing fully to Echoes of the End. Halldór elaborated:
After we formed the studio, we began crafting long-term visions for this game. Over the years, we iterated on different versions, focusing on the foundational technology required for a project of this scale.
Partnership with Plaion
In their quest for publication support, the team connected with Plaion, cultivating a relationship that would last approximately five years. Halldór explained:
Initially met during Gamescom, we felt Plaion aligned perfectly with our needs, providing experience in game production and crucial project funding.
Team Expansion and Collaboration Dynamics
As the team grew from 16 to around 40 employees, Halldór elaborated on their collaborative work dynamics:
For a project like ours, having the majority of the team on-site promotes quick communication and teamwork. However, we also embrace remote working, ensuring team cohesion through daily calls.
Inspiration from Iceland
Myrkur Games draws heavily from their Icelandic roots, with Halldór and Magnús stating that while the game isn’t set in Iceland, its visual essence is inspired by the country’s stunning landscapes:
We liken our game’s inspiration to how New Zealand served as the backdrop for The Lord of the Rings. Iceland’s unique scenery and culture naturally shape our fantasy world.
The Foundation of Aema
Echoes of the End presents a world governed by a nuanced application of magic, differing from conventional high-fantasy settings:
While magic exists, it’s not the focal point. It deeply influences the world’s culture and history, particularly in shaping Ryn’s journey.
Character Arcs and Storyline

Gameplay Mechanics: Action Meets Adventure
Halldór summarized the gameplay, likening it to titles such as God of War and Star Wars: Jedi, but with a unique twist thanks to Ryn’s abilities:
The combat requires strategic thinking and offers ramped-up action. Players can combine Ryn’s magical abilities with her swordplay for dynamic encounters.
Dynamic Companion System
As players navigate through battles and puzzles, Abram’s role as a companion is integral:
His actions blend seamlessly with gameplay, allowing for strategic combo attacks and unique opportunities during combat encounters.
Exploration and Progression
Echoes of the End promises an engaging adventure, with elements of exploration and character development sprinkled throughout the experience:
We’ve designed 10 chapters, each presenting distinct environments and mechanics to maintain a fresh flow throughout the game.
Final Touches Before Launch
As the launch date approaches, Halldór concluded with a mix of anticipation and determination:
We’re committed to putting forth our best work and can’t wait for players to experience what we’ve created over these years.
