As we edge closer to the retail availability of AMD’s Threadripper 9000 series, frequent benchmark leaks are revealing impressive data on the performance of these CPUs. The flagship of the lineup, the Ryzen Threadripper 9980X, has already shattered records on platforms like PassMark, indicating its potential.

Threadripper 9980X Geekbench

Recent Geekbench results show that the 9980X significantly outperforms its predecessor, the Ryzen Threadripper 7980X. With scores of 3, 259 points in single-threaded tests and 28, 666 in multi-threaded tests, this CPU demonstrates impressive generational improvement. While Geekbench isn’t the definitive benchmark tool, it provides a valuable perspective on a CPU’s relative performance within the market.

In comparison to the 7980X, the 9980X offers an 11% increase in single-threaded performance and a striking 16% rise in multi-threaded performance. Notably, while these benchmarks favor the best figures from the 7980X, the average performance is even lower, underscoring the 9980X’s capabilities.

Ryzen Threadripper 9980X Specs

Designed on AMD’s groundbreaking Zen 5 architecture, the Ryzen Threadripper 9980X retains the same configuration of 64 cores and 128 threads as its predecessor. However, it benefits from boosted clock speeds, featuring a base clock of 3.2 GHz and a max boost clock reaching up to 5.4 GHz—300 MHz higher than the 7980X. Both CPUs share a thermal design power (TDP) of 350W, but the 9980X’s enhanced performance per watt is noteworthy for users requiring high-caliber processing power.

For enterprise-level users, the Threadripper PRO 9000WX series promises even greater power, with options for up to 96 cores and 192 threads. Anticipation is building as these processors are expected to launch soon, with several retailers already beginning to accept pre-orders.
