Anthem’s Final Chapter: Server Shutdown Announcement
In early 2019, BioWare made a bold move by launching Anthem, a cooperative multiplayer RPG aimed at delivering fresh, seasonal content. Unfortunately, the game did not meet the standards set by Electronic Arts (EA) or the expectations of its player base. Despite efforts to revive the title, BioWare has decided to discontinue support, marking the end of the line for the online-only experience.
Official Shutdown Date Confirmed
The game’s closure is officially set for January 12, 2026, as revealed in a recent blog post. Starting now, players can no longer make purchases using in-game premium currency, although any remaining credits can still be spent until the shutdown date arrives.
“We have an important update to share regarding Anthem, ”stated the post.“After careful consideration, we will be sunsetting Anthem on January 12, 2026. This means that the game will still be playable online for the next 180+ days.”
Implications of the Shutdown
As Anthem lacks an offline mode, it will become completely unplayable for all users after the specified date. This situation is particularly critical for EA Play subscribers, who will lose access to the game earlier, on August 15, 2025. This change will also impact players using Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
Background and Community Response
The last public communication regarding Anthem from EA and BioWare occurred in 2021 when the companies announced the cancellation of the much-anticipated rework known as Anthem NEXT. Following this announcement, the development team was reassigned to work on the acclaimed Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises.
In their blog post, BioWare expressed gratitude to the game’s community:
“We deeply appreciate your dedication, passion and support over the years and we’d like to thank you for that.”
Impact on BioWare Employees
Notably, EA has clarified that the termination of Anthem’s servers will not result in any layoffs at BioWare. They confirmed, “No, the sunsetting of Anthem has not led to any layoffs.”
