Twinless: A Unique Exploration of Grief and Connection at Sundance Film Festival
The Sundance Film Festival’s inaugural week has been livened by Twinless, a film that masterfully navigates themes of grief, loneliness, and codependence through an unexpectedly humorous portrayal. Conceived and helmed by James Sweeney, who also plays a leading role, this poignant narrative revolves around two men who forge a connection while attending a Twin Bereavement Group. Dylan O’Brien delivers a standout performance as Roman, adeptly depicting both the present-day mourning figure and his late twin brother, Rocky, in flashbacks. However, it’s Sweeney’s character, Dennis, that truly brings the narrative to life.
O’Brien eagerly embraced the chance to star in Twinless, marking his debut as a producer alongside his acting role. He attributes his enthusiasm for the project to Sweeney’s compelling screenplay and his prior performance in Straight Up. As their offscreen camaraderie flourishes, the duo also interacts with a rich ensemble of characters who either share in their grief or add complexity to their relationship. The supporting cast includes notable talents like Lauren Graham as Roman’s mother, Lisa; Aisling Franciosi as Dennis’ coworker, Marcie; Chris Perfetti as Rocky’s friend, George; and Susan Park as Dennis’ boss, Sage.
During the film’s premiere at Sundance, ScreenRant had the opportunity to engage the cast in discussions surrounding the film’s intriguing blend of humor and emotional depth. While O’Brien and Sweeney were enthusiastic about the unique, heartfelt connection their characters share, Franciosi was more reserved regarding her character’s role. Park, on the other hand, reflected on Sweeney’s dual role as writer and director: “When you write something and direct it simultaneously, you gain an intimate understanding of every character and situation, which adds an automatic layer of depth.”
James Sweeney: Insights from the Writer-Director
Unveiling One of Many Inspirations for the Screenplay

In his dual role as writer and director, Sweeney shared with ScreenRant the backstory behind Twinless, revealing that this project has been a journey since he penned the first draft in 2015. His inspiration? A personal experience that resonates through the narrative:
James Sweeney: I wrote the first draft in 2015, so it’s been a road. I had just broken up with my boyfriend who was an identical twin, so that might have had a little something to do with it.
When asked about balancing comedy and drama, Sweeney emphasized the importance of tone and collaboration:
James Sweeney: This guy, honestly! [Points to Dylan O’Brien] Finding the tone is tricky when traversing genres. I hope the audience finds it both familiar and fresh.
Regarding their rapport, Sweeney noted the long-term connection he developed with O’Brien throughout the production:
James Sweeney: We met in 2020, so he’s been part of this project for years. It was formative for our relationship as director-actor and friends. This process brought us really close. I hope that chemistry translates on screen.
Dylan O’Brien: The Depth of His Character
Celebrating the Upcoming Release of Ponyboi

When discussing Twinless, O’Brien expressed his emotional connection to Roman and the dynamics of his character’s relationship with Dennis. Their stark differences create an intriguing contrast, enriching their bond:
Dylan O’Brien: Seeing these two characters form a friendship is unique. I felt an immediate connection to Roman and once I saw James’s first film, I was convinced we would make a fun duo to watch.
This marks O’Brien’s second consecutive year at Sundance, and prior to his appearance, he received uplifting news regarding Ponyboi, which is set for a theatrical release through Fox Entertainment Studios’ indie label, Tideline, on June 27. He expressed his excitement:
Dylan O’Brien: [It feels] amazing. It’s a very special film to me, to see it finally come out. We’re so grateful after such a long wait.
Aisling Franciosi: Insights into Her Character
Reflections on Her Roles in Iconic Television Series

While Twinless is best experienced with minimal prior knowledge, Aisling Franciosi provided some insight into her character, Marcie, a seemingly cheerful receptionist who becomes romantically involved with the protagonists:
Aisling Franciosi: Marcie is very chipper and friendly, but there’s more depth to her character than meets the eye.
Regarding working closely with Sweeney, Franciosi valued the clarity of his vision and collaborative spirit:
Aisling Franciosi: Working with a writer-director like James is wonderful. He knows exactly what he wants and communicates it clearly.
In addition to her film achievements, Franciosi has garnered attention in popular series such as The Legend of Vox Machina and Game of Thrones. As she touched on her experiences, she expressed her enthusiasm in returning for future arcs:
Aisling Franciosi: I would love to reprise my role. It was thrilling to be part of something so significant.
