Dying Light 10th Anniversary Interview with Franchise Director Tymon Smektała

Exciting Developments for Dying Light Franchise Amid 10th Anniversary Celebrations

In a noteworthy announcement marking the 10th anniversary of the original Dying Light, Techland shared a series of updates concerning the franchise. Fans can anticipate exciting events and promotions across both games, with the upcoming title, The Beast, set to launch this Summer. Additionally, the company has plans for future initiatives, including board games and a comic series dedicated to the franchise.

To explore these developments in depth, we had the pleasure of speaking with Tymon Smektała, the Director of the Dying Light Franchise. For those who may not have tuned in, we’ve also included today’s episode of the Dying to Know show at the end of this article.

Reflecting on a Decade of Dying Light

Tymon Smektała: Today is a special day for Techland. We’re celebrating the 10th anniversary of Dying Light, a series with a rich history. Not every game is fortunate enough to reach this milestone.

During today’s live stream, we looked back at the franchise and discussed our plans for the future. The celebrations are filled with engaging activities for our fans, kicking off today across both titles. For Dying Light, we’re bringing back popular events like HyperMode and Super-Crane, which players have cherished over the past decade. Next week, we’ll also honor the third anniversary of Dying Light 2 with a set of bounties that offer rewards celebrating the series’ legacy.

We aim to use this celebration as a chance for newcomers to explore Dying Light for the first time. As part of this, we’re implementing exciting promotions across all platforms. I’m proud to share that we’ve reached an incredible milestone of 45 million players across the series.

Insights on Upcoming Titles

While our focus today is indeed on the anniversary, we provided curious fans with a brief update regarding The Beast. Although we are amid celebrations and won’t dive into the specifics, the stream offered a behind-the-scenes glimpse into our development process, including Easter eggs for the community to uncover.

Tymon Smektała: As part of our celebrations, we’ll be offering players a special anniversary bundle that allows them to customize their characters and buggies for the occasion. We’re also working on an update that enhances our graphics engine, along with a remastered soundtrack by Pavo Bashak. While it’s not a complete overhaul, expect improvements like upgraded texture resolution and better lighting, particularly in dialogue scenes.

What’s Next for the Franchise?

Tymon Smektała: Regarding the update’s release timing, we’re not ready to provide an exact date just yet. This upgrade involves technical achievements with an older engine, and we want to ensure we can meet any set release dates before announcing them.

Alessio Palumbo: That’s understandable. Are you continuing work on Dying Light 2 as well?

Tymon Smektała: Absolutely. We’re honored to commit to supporting Dying Light 2 for five years, and we’re well into its third year. Our community seems to appreciate the rhythm we’ve developed, featuring four major events each year, accompanied by smaller updates in between.

Looking ahead, we are introducing new weapon types and technical improvements derived from our work on The Beast. Players can anticipate the Tower Raid update on February 19, which will introduce a permanent co-op mode that we tested last year based on community feedback.

Enhancing Player Experience

Additionally, we’re refining the initial hours of Dying Light 2 to create a smoother narrative flow and enhance player progression.

We’re also looking to invigorate our community of content creators. With the tools we’ve made available, players can design their maps, and we want to provide them with greater support and direction to elevate the quality of their creations.

Future Releases and Collaborations

When it comes to upcoming firearms and melee weapons, Tymon Smektała hinted that this year will bring an array of exciting new options, with some surprises planned for players.

Reflecting on how firearms are integrated within Dying Light 2, Smektała acknowledged the ongoing challenge of balancing these mechanics with the melee combat that defines the series. Innovations and balancing will continue to be a focus as we evolve the gameplay experience.

Furthermore, recent talks about potential projects beyond gaming involve board games and comic adaptations, though conversations are ongoing without any firm announcements. There’s even an enduring interest in exploring potential film or television adaptations.

Closing Statements

Tymon Smektała: This journey over the last decade has been nothing short of remarkable. None of us could have anticipated that Dying Light would remain a pivotal player in the zombie genre a decade later. We owe immense gratitude to our 45 million players who have supported the series along the way. It’s a privilege to provide entertainment and enjoyment to our community, and we look forward to continuing this journey together.
