The highly anticipated official Minecraft movie is finally underway after several years of waiting. Featuring big stars like Jack Black as Steve and Jason Momoa portraying Garret, a brand-new character, this adaptation has excited fans who have long requested a film set in the iconic blocky universe. Mojang Studios has been gearing up for this project as well, although creating a film is an extensive endeavor.

This article delves into the specifics of the Minecraft movie’s production timeline. If Warner Bros. maintains the current schedule, the film is expected to be released in the United States on April 4, 2025. This timeline suggests a production span of over a year; however, plans for this feature film originated a decade ago.

The conception of the Minecraft movie traces back to 2014, more than ten years prior to its slated release. It was Markus Persson, widely known as “Notch,”who first revealed Warner Bros.’ interest in developing a film based on the beloved sandbox game.

A multitude of key figures, including producers and directors, have come and gone over the years, which lends to the idea that production for the movie actually began as early as 2014. In 2015, Warner Bros. enlisted Rob McElhenney as the film’s director.

Primary development commenced in 2016 when Steve Carell was hired to voice the lead character. The film had originally been set for release in April 2019, but was delayed due to scheduling challenges, which resulted in the departure of the director.

In 2019, the project saw a resurgence of hope when Warner Bros. announced that Peter Sollett would take on the roles of writer and director for the Minecraft film. A new release date was established: March 4, 2022. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic led to further delays in both filming and the release date.

The Final Version of the Minecraft Movie

Finally, in April 2022, Warner Bros. announced a significant change: Sollett would no longer direct the movie, and Jared Hess was brought on board. At this point, Jason Momoa was set to star in the live-action adaptation. One year later, the definitive release date was established as April 4, 2025.

In January 2024, Jack Black was officially added to the cast, and filming commenced. Given the numerous shifts in planning, it’s fair to assert that the Minecraft movie has been in production for over a year; however, the evolution of a film based on the game has been in development for more than ten years.
